On the morning of July 31, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction announced 35 subsidized bus routes operating from August 1. Notably, 27 of these routes use pure EV electric vehicles, which are environmentally friendly, help limit emissions, reduce noise pollution and are in line with the global green transport development trend. The remaining 8 routes use diesel vehicles.
All 550+ vehicles operating on the routes are manufactured by Kim Long Motor factory ( Hue ), meeting international standards. The charging station system for electric vehicles is also invested in a modern way, ensuring stable operation, optimizing costs and reducing the burden of subsidies from the state budget.
The bus routes are planned synchronously, with reasonable travel times, closely connected to the future Metro system, aiming to build a smooth and convenient public transport network for residents and tourists.
In particular, passengers belonging to policy groups such as war invalids, sick soldiers, the elderly, people with disabilities, children under 1.3 meters tall and people with free bus passes will be exempted from tickets when using these bus routes.
Mr. Nguyen Vinh Toan, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, said that the launch of 35 new bus routes marks an important first step in the process of restructuring the public transport system towards sustainability, contributing to reducing the load on urban infrastructure and improving air quality.
After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City now has a total of 164 bus routes, of which 108 are subsidized, with more than 2,300 vehicles in operation. The city is gradually replacing buses using fossil fuels with electric and green energy vehicles. The proportion of clean, environmentally friendly buses has now reached nearly 50%.
