Earth is about to welcome a new natural satellite, and this "mini-moon" will be with us for the next two months. It's actually a small asteroid, about 10 meters in diameter, officially known as 2024 PT₅.
This asteroid was discovered by the Earth-Asteroid Collision Alert System (ATLAS) on August 7-8 and its findings were published by researchers in Research Notes of the AAS. Calculations of its trajectory suggest that it will become a satellite of Earth on September 29.
The small moon will be our companion for 56.6 days, completing a full orbit around Earth during that time. Afterward, the rock will escape Earth's gravitational pull on November 25th, returning to its orbit around the Sun. 2024 PT₅ will then glide past for a final farewell on January 9th, 2025, at a distance of 1.8 million kilometers from Earth before returning to its dark shadow. PT₅ 2024 is expected to return on November 8th, 2055.
