According to astronomers, this year’s November supermoon will reach its maximum fullness at 8:19 p.m. on November 5 (Vietnam time). However, the best time to see the Beaver supermoon is on the evening of November 6, when the moon has just risen above the eastern horizon, reflecting a brilliant orange-yellow light in the twilight sky.
The moon is closest to Earth in 6 years
Data from AstroPixels shows the Moon will be only about 356,980km from Earth, the closest it has been since February 2019. At perigee, the closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a full moon can appear 14% larger and up to 30% brighter than at its farthest point (aphelion).
So, to the naked eye, observers will see the Moon larger, brighter, and "more subdued" than other moons of the year. This is the second supermoon in a series of three consecutive supermoons in 2025, following the Harvest Moon in October and will be followed by the Cold Moon in December.
The name "Beaver Moon" comes from the traditions of North American Native tribes. Every November, beavers begin building dams and preparing for the icy winter, usually under the light of a full moon in late autumn.
According to NASA records, in addition to the name "Beaver Moon", the full moon in November is also known by many other folk names such as Frost Moon, Snow Moon or Trading Moon, reflecting the customs, climate and agricultural life in each region in ancient times.
The phenomenon of "supermoon" occurs when the full moon phase coincides with the time when the Moon is at its perigee. At that time, the sunlight reflected on the Moon's surface will be brighter and stronger, making observers clearly feel the difference in size and brightness.
According to NASA, the Moon orbits the Earth in an elliptical orbit, with a distance ranging from about 356,000 to 406,000 km. This difference makes some full moons during the year appear much larger and brighter, which is called a "supermoon".
In 2025, astronomers recorded three consecutive supermoons in October, November and December. Then, the "Wolf Moon" in early January 2026 is also predicted to be a rare supermoon to open the new year.
The ideal time to watch the super moon Beaver
Although the supermoon peaks on November 5, the best time to view the moon is on the evening of November 6, when the moon begins to rise from the east.
At this time, due to the moon illusion effect, the Moon will appear larger and reddish-orange when it is close to the ground, creating a spectacular scene, especially if observed from an open place such as a lakeshore, hilltop or beach.
In Vietnam, if the weather is favorable, astronomy lovers can admire the supermoon most clearly around 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on November 6. At that time, the Moon will appear in the constellation Taurus, close to the constellation Pleiades, a prominent "couple" easily recognizable with the naked eye.
The Super Beaver Moon is not only a fascinating astronomical event, but also a reminder for people to pause their hustle and bustle, look up at the sky and feel the pure beauty of nature.
In an age of electric lights and screens, a bright moonlit night can remind us that the sky is still there, vast and magical as it was thousands of years ago.
If you are lucky enough to have clear skies on the evening of November 6, take a few minutes outside, turn off your phone, look up at the Moon, and perhaps you will understand why humans have never stopped being fascinated by that light.
