The Toyota Tacoma H2 Overlander pickup truck is considered one of the Japanese automaker's boldest projects, applying hydrogen technology for the first time to a mid-size off-road vehicle, instead of urban sedans or SUVs. The hydrogen-powered Tacoma H2 Overlander was developed in record time, just a few months, thanks to close coordination between Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in California and North Carolina, and Toyota North America R&D.
The exterior of the vehicle features a series of specialized upgrades for outdoor activities such as: metal underbody panels, front/rear rescue hooks, high-capacity winch, auxiliary LED lights and white-blue decals inspired by Toyota's previous H2 concept models. The vehicle has front brakes borrowed from the Toyota Tundra, while 17-inch wheels with 35-inch off-road tires enhance the ability to overcome harsh terrain. At the rear of the vehicle, Toyota has installed a pop-up tent and a three-way opening trunk, turning the Tacoma H2 into a true “mobile home” for long camping trips. The rear trunk door is designed in a “roboformed” form, ensuring both rigidity and a large spare tire for added practicality.
The most special feature of the car is the transmission system. Toyota equips the Tacoma H2 Overlander with two electric motors for a total capacity of 547 horsepower, combined with a 24.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and a Mirai fuel cell. The system includes three high-pressure hydrogen tanks, arranged in the chassis to optimize space and safety. This power source allows the car to operate without emitting any CO₂, only producing purified water as a by-product. Toyota has even developed a proprietary wastewater recovery system, allowing users to use this water for car washing, bathing or outdoor activities. In addition, the Tacoma H2 can also power a small home off the grid or charge two other electric vehicles simultaneously. Despite the switch to a new powertrain, the Tacoma H2 Overlander still maintains its inherent off-road spirit.
The Tacoma H2 Overlander pickup truck is still equipped with a front limited-slip differential lock, rear electronic differential lock, TRD billet long-travel suspension system and Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shock absorbers.
