Regarding the intensity and frequency of severe cold spells this winter in the North, Deputy Head of Climate Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Nguyen Duc Hoa said that with the state of the atmosphere combined with forecast models, it is likely that this winter the temperature will be approximately equal to or lower than the average of many years, and the severe cold will be equivalent to the average of many years.

However, there is a possibility of a cold spell causing severe cold accompanied by frost and ice, especially in the northern mountainous provinces.

Regarding the ongoing cold spell that has caused the temperature in Hanoi to drop to 18 degrees Celsius, and in some mountainous areas below 16 degrees Celsius, many people are concerned that this is a sign of an unusual winter, colder than the average of many years. Analyzing the above issue, Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoa said that with a temperature threshold of 18 degrees Celsius in Hanoi, according to statistics from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the frequency of this temperature level in the first 10 days of October is about 6%, in the middle of the month is 14% and in the last 10 days of October is about 26%. Thus, this is a normal development, nothing too special. The time when the cold air appears this year is also similar to the average of many years.

"In the face of the cold air affecting the Northern and North Central regions, people need to regularly monitor the short-term weather bulletin of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting at nchmf.gov.vn to grasp the information. In the long term, people need to coordinate with the government to have measures to protect livestock, change the crop structure... suitable and resistant to the cold, especially in the northern mountainous provinces," Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoa advised.
