For Vietnam, joining ASEAN has strategic significance in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment, expanding development space and enhancing its position. Vietnam's foreign policy and guidelines have clearly stated the role of Vietnam in multilateral mechanisms, especially ASEAN.
The year 2025 marks three decades since Vietnam became a member of ASEAN. Practice has confirmed that the policy of joining ASEAN is a correct decision, of historical and strategic significance for the Party and State, bringing important benefits in terms of security, development and position.
Joining ASEAN has helped Vietnam break the embargo, gradually integrating deeply into the region and reaching the international level. With the motto of being proactive, positive and responsible, Vietnam has made many practical contributions to the success of ASEAN, associated with the milestones of ASEAN's development.

Vietnam's participation in ASEAN contributes to promoting the admission process of Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia, completing ASEAN-10 bringing together all Southeast Asian countries, opening a new era of cooperation, friendship and trust.
Vietnam also participates and plays an important role in determining the development direction and major policies of ASEAN, actively and responsibly contributing to maintaining solidarity, unity, and the central role of ASEAN, building and consolidating ASEAN's principled stance and balanced common voice in international and regional issues.
30 years of participating in ASEAN has witnessed the maturity and increasing prestige of Vietnam, from the process of getting acquainted, learning, to proactively and actively participating and now being ready to take on important responsibilities, gradually promoting its leading role. In particular, the term of ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 left a strong impression on the role, management capacity and leadership of Vietnam, helping the region overcome the unprecedented difficulties of the Covid-19 pandemic, fully completing the set goals in the spirit of "Cohesion and Proactive Adaptation", consolidating solidarity, maintaining the momentum of cooperation, proactively orienting the new development stage with the initiative to build the ASEAN Community Vision after 2025.
In its role as coordinator of relations between ASEAN and many partners (such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, etc.), Vietnam has played a good role as a bridge, deepening cooperation, elevating relations, and making substantial contributions to peace, security and development in the region.
Beyond the regional scope, Vietnam has implemented many initiatives that have left a strong mark, contributing to connecting ASEAN's priorities and concerns with the international community. Among them, it is impossible not to mention the initiative to organize the first meeting of the United Nations Security Council on ASEAN-UN cooperation in maintaining international peace and security, contributing to promoting cooperation between the two organizations, enhancing ASEAN's position as well as Vietnam's role in ASEAN and the United Nations.
The success of the ASEAN Future Forum in 2024 and 2025 in Hanoi is a clear demonstration of Vietnam's leadership in the discussion and orientation processes on the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh leading the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation to the 47th ASEAN Summit and related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is an opportunity for Vietnam to once again affirm the consistent foreign policy of our Party and State in the spirit of independence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralization, comprehensive and deep international integration, joining hands to build an ASEAN of inclusive and sustainable development.
