Understanding more about Tet

Phonesoulinthon Souksavanh (Lao People's Democratic Republic) is a 4th-year student majoring in Vietnamese Language and Culture, Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages.

For the first time, I got to experience Vietnamese Tet through an activity involving cooking traditional Tet dishes and learning about the traditional Vietnamese New Year.

Phonesoulinthon shared that, through the exchange activities, she gained a better understanding of Vietnam's traditional Lunar New Year. This activity also helps international students have the opportunity to access traditional cultural values, contributing to strengthening the bond, exchange, and understanding between Vietnamese and international students.

Along with promoting international integration in education , many universities in the city organize cultural experience activities, including programs to celebrate the traditional Vietnamese Lunar New Year for international students such as "Tet in My Heart 2026" by the University of Foreign Languages; "Vietnamese Tet for International Students"; and "Spring Connection - Experiencing Vietnamese Culture" by the University of Education.

These activities help international students better understand Vietnamese cultural identity, while also strengthening interaction and connection in a multicultural school environment, and providing opportunities to introduce and share stories about their country's culture.

Khalilov Alexander (Russian Federation), a student of the Faculty of International Studies, University of Foreign Languages, also experienced traditional Tet cultural activities for the first time, such as calligraphy, cooking, and participating in folk games, expressing his excitement at the joyful atmosphere and rich traditional identity.

According to Alexander, each activity not only provides an experiential learning experience but also helps international students gain a deeper understanding of the cultural depth and community spirit in Vietnamese life. These are memorable impressions during their studies and life in Vietnam.

As an American who has lived and studied in Vietnam for three years and experienced the traditional Tet holiday, Joe, a student majoring in Education and Politics at the University of Education, couldn't hide his excitement when participating in the "Vietnamese Tet for International Students" program organized by his university.

Joe said that this year's activity involves filming videos, conducting interviews, and creating creative content to spread this beauty to international friends.

Experience the beauty of Vietnamese culture.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Vice Rector of the University of Education (Da Nang University), Lunar New Year is the most important holiday of the year for Vietnamese people.

Wishing to provide international students with a warm and intimate Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) atmosphere, the school organizes a Vietnamese Tet program every year, giving international students the opportunity to experience firsthand and better understand the spirit and beauty of traditional Vietnamese culture.

International students get to participate in a variety of enriching and experiential activities such as writing New Year's wishes and greetings, experiencing making banh chung and banh tet (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), and practicing calligraphy.

In addition, students also had the opportunity to enjoy traditional sweets and preserves such as coconut jam, ginger jam, sticky rice cakes, and fermented rice cakes… to experience the distinctive Tet flavors of each region.

Sharing the same view, Dr. Nguyen Huu Binh, Vice Rector of the University of Foreign Languages (Da Nang University), also believes that Lunar New Year is the most important festival in Vietnamese traditional culture, a sacred moment of reunion.

Therefore, creating opportunities for students to experience Tet in a genuine and vivid way is essential for the school to maintain the annual "Tet in My Heart" program.

This is not only an opportunity for international students to explore the beauty of Vietnamese culture, but also a chance for them to share and exchange information about the customs and traditions of different countries.

Through these activities, Vietnamese and international students not only learn about the Vietnamese Tet holiday through stories or books, but also directly experience it, practice the language, and share their feelings and perceptions about Vietnam and its people.
