One of the biggest barriers for YouTube viewers is language. However, as AI technology continues to develop, this barrier is gradually being removed thanks to automatic dubbing tools.
A new extension called YouTube Dubbing has appeared on the Chrome web store, allowing users to dub foreign videos into Vietnamese while watching. This extension has just been launched but already has about 100,000 users.
When installed, this utility uses automatic translation technology combined with AI voice to translate video content into Vietnamese. Users who have experienced this utility all agree that the tool brings significant convenience, but there are still many limitations.
Online translation by YouTube Dubbing
Mr. Tran Phuc, an office worker in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, is quite excited about the YouTube Dubbing tool because it helps him watch videos in English or many other languages without subtitles, the content is directly converted into Vietnamese voice.
"However, the tool still lags, jerks, and the sound is slower than the image, making the experience not really complete. With uncommon languages such as Japanese or Russian, the tool's processing speed is significantly slower. The reading voice is generally unnatural and lacks emphasis" - Mr. Phuc shared.
Ms. Nguyen Hoai Thanh (living in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) often reads foreign cosmetic reviews, so this tool is very useful for her. However, according to her, the AI voice is still stiff and the translation is not smooth. "I hope this tool will continue to be improved so that users have a better experience," she said.
To install YouTube Dubbing, users need to open the Google Chrome browser, click on the 3 dots in the right corner of the screen, select "Extensions". Then, access the Chrome online store, search for the YouTube Dubbing application and download it.
YouTube has also recently introduced an AI tool to dub online content, supporting many languages such as Vietnamese, English, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Turkish. However, this feature is currently only deployed on certain channels.
Although it is considered convenient, many users think that this translation tool is not really perfect, as the voiceover is still mechanical, translating each word in a stereotyped way.
