In recent days, Taiwanese public opinion and media have been stirred up by a controversial incident at Phu Quoc airport, Vietnam.

A Taiwanese tourist shared that her family had their plane tickets torn up and made it difficult for them to leave the country by Vietnamese immigration officers, after a tense situation occurred during the customs check-in process.

In a post shared on social media, the female tourist said that the local tour guide said that "if you don't pay, you will be in trouble", causing many people to question the transparency and the possibility of shortcomings in operations at Phu Quoc airport.

Debate on culture and behavior

The Taiwanese female tourist's post on the Threads platform on May 13 quickly attracted attention, creating a heated debate with thousands of comments and shares.

Many people expressed their dissatisfaction, saying that this is a disguised form of extortion, seriously affecting the image of Vietnam's tourism .

Meanwhile, many netizens in Taiwan also criticized the behavior of immigration officers in Phu Quoc if it was true, saying that it was "an abuse of power", unprofessional and not up to standard.

However, there are also opinions that there may have been a misunderstanding, leading to immigration officers tearing up the tourist's plane ticket, making the situation more serious.

Under the post of the female passenger involved in the incident, a netizen shared that he had lived in Vietnam for nearly 10 years but had never encountered a similar case.

This person believes that the cause could be due to misunderstanding or uncooperative attitude from the tourist.

Several other Threads users echoed this sentiment, explaining that in many countries, immigration officers have the authority to refuse entry or require passengers to comply with specific regulations.

According to Yahoo Kimo News (Taiwan) on May 15, some opinions say that a part of Taiwanese people when traveling to other countries still keep the habit of expecting to be served like in Taiwan, so they may not have adapted to the strict working style of border control forces in some developing countries.

The Limits of Power and Expectations

Some experienced travelers say that at many airports in Southeast Asia, immigration officers often have high authority and the working process is quite strict and inflexible.

This opinion emphasizes that in the context of a rigorous testing process, inappropriate actions or attitudes can easily be interpreted as a lack of cooperation.

Therefore, following the procedure and maintaining a peaceful attitude is considered important to ensure the process goes smoothly, according to Yahoo Kimo News .

On the YouTube platform, user Eric's channel posted a video analyzing the incident objectively.

He believes that language barriers and unclear attitudes and communication are likely to have led to misunderstandings and tensions.

However, excessive actions such as tearing up tickets or threats by immigration officers are unacceptable, according to the report.

An unnamed travel agency representative interviewed by SETN (Taiwan) said that pressure at the Phu Quoc border gate is increasing due to the rapid increase in tourists, but the act of tearing up tickets is unprofessional and shows that immigration officers cannot control their emotions.

Regarding the information "if you don't pay, you will be made difficult" posted by the female passenger, the unit interviewed by SETN said that currently many countries have priority customs clearance services with fees. However, these fees are all implemented according to a clear registration process, not collected directly on the spot.

Many opinions say that the incident at Phu Quoc airport has become a typical example of the differences in the concepts and behaviors of immigration officers between countries, and at the same time reflects the psychology and expectations of tourists when coming to Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam.
