Canon's monthly fee for webcam software controversy

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/01/2025

According to Ars Technica , Canon's adoption of a paid model for its EOS Webcam Utility Pro software is causing controversy in the photography community. One user shared on his personal blog the story of having to pay to use his $900 Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II camera as a high-quality webcam.

If you only use the free version, the software only offers 720p video resolution, 30 fps (frames per second) and does not allow image parameter adjustment. To unlock more advanced features, including 60 fps video , users are forced to pay $5/month or $50/year.

Canon is one of the few camera manufacturers that charges for software that turns cameras into webcams, which is causing a backlash from the community.

Most users believe that Canon is a hardware company, not a software company, and that they should provide software that complements the purpose of their cameras. This fee-based model is unconvincing, especially when the company’s profits are approaching $3 billion.

One of the reasons why many users are frustrated is that high-end cameras often have features like HDMI or USB-C ports, which allow you to connect and use the camera as a webcam. However, using these features on some Canon cameras requires additional hardware or third-party software, such as Magic Lantern or CHDK, which are open-source solutions but not always stable.

While the EOS Webcam Utility Pro software offers many benefits, Canon’s subscription model has been criticized as unfair to users who have already made a large investment in the device. Many argue that including basic webcam software in the initial cost of the camera is necessary, especially as the need to use cameras as webcams for online work and learning becomes more prevalent.

Canon has yet to officially respond to these criticisms. Meanwhile, discussions on the issue continue, revolving around the question of whether a major camera manufacturer like Canon should adopt a cost-based business model for software.
