According to information from the National Institute of Nutrition , the rate of stunting (height-for-age) in children under 5 years old remains high.
Of which, the rate of children under 5 years old with preclinical vitamin A deficiency is 9.5% and 58% of children under 5 years old are still zinc deficient (according to the results of the national nutrition survey in 2019 - 2020).
Mr. Vu Van Tac - Head of the Department of Nutrition Monitoring and Policy, National Institute of Nutrition - said that vitamin A is an important micronutrient involved in many metabolic processes and functions of the body. Vitamin A deficiency causes children to grow slowly, increases the risk of disease, and reduces vision. The group most susceptible to vitamin A deficiency is children under 5 years old.
To supplement vitamin A for children, the National Institute of Nutrition organizes a vitamin A supplementation campaign twice a year in June and December every year.
The National Institute of Nutrition said it has provided enough vitamin A for the second phase of 2023 to localities.
The second high-dose vitamin A supplementation campaign for children will be held from December 1, and it is expected that over 6 million children will be supplemented during this period.
The Institute also recommends that parents follow the instructions of commune and ward health stations to take children from 3 to 59 months old to take vitamin A at the health station.
