Unique exhibition in strategic tunnels at Thang Long Imperial Citadel

On the morning of August 19, the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025) and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025), under the direction of the Hanoi People's Committee, the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center organized the opening ceremony of a series of exhibition activities at "House and Bunker D67, Cipher Bunker - General Staff, Flag Tower/Hanoi Flagpole.

Attending the event were: Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda and Education Commission Nguyen Trong Nghia; Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha and leaders of central and Hanoi departments and branches; veterans and historical witnesses.

A place marking the thousand-year-old relics of the Capital

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center Nguyen Thanh Quang said that the Central Area of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long - Hanoi - a world cultural heritage, is a place where the typical historical and cultural values of the Vietnamese people converge and crystallize. This place not only preserves thousands of years of sediment, but also preserves revolutionary relics - "red addresses" with rich traditional educational significance such as: House and Bunker D67, Combat Command Bunker T1, Crypto Bunker and Hanoi Flag Tower relic.

In the continuous flow of more than 1,300 years of Thang Long - Hanoi, these relics are especially important historical marks of the glorious Ho Chi Minh era, where the heroic milestones of the nation and the heroic Capital are recorded, contributing to the unique identity of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel heritage complex today.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang also said that in recent years, the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center has coordinated with experts, scientists, and professional agencies to gradually research, preserve, and promote the value of revolutionary relics in the Thang Long Imperial Citadel heritage site, opening it widely to welcome domestic and international visitors.

The Center has met and paid tribute to historical witnesses; collected and supplemented many documents and artifacts related to revolutionary relics; organized exhibitions and introduced valuable documents and artifacts here to serve the public; supplemented historical information through QR codes; built a 360° virtual tour at the D67 House relic; interpreted the historical story of Tunnel T1.

In addition, the Center also organized scientific seminars and talks on “The role of the General Headquarters in the 1975 Spring General Offensive and Uprising”; “Restoring and promoting the value of the Combat Command Bunker”. In particular, the Hanoi Flag Tower relic - the sacred symbol of the Capital is honored with a 3D mapping art lighting system, both shining its historical value and expressing the desire for breakthrough, determination to integrate and develop.

“The historical stories told and vividly recreated in the displays and exhibitions opened today help us review the glorious golden pages of history, pay tribute to generations of heroic martyrs who fell for peace and freedom, and are an endless source of inspiration, fostering love for the Fatherland and national pride, empowering today's generation to continue writing the story of peace in the new era, the era of wealth, civilization, prosperity, and national growth,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang.

Many images and documents introduced for the first time

On the morning of August 19, people and tourists were able to visit and experience the exhibition space at House and Tunnel D67 and the Cryptographic Tunnel.

With the theme “House and Bunker D67 - Journey to total victory” (phase 1) to clarify the command assurance activities of the Cipher Department - General Staff at the General Headquarters during the resistance war against the US, saving the country, especially in the period of 1972 - 1975. The exhibition includes 4 themes: The Gulf of Tonkin incident and the first destructive war; The story of House and Bunker D67 and Defeating the “Vietnamization of the war”; The second destructive war and the Great Victory of Spring 1975.

Here, the public can listen to stereo explanations and see displays of the working area of the General Staff; the office of General Vo Nguyen Giap and many artifacts related to combat equipment of our army.

Right behind House and Bunker D67 is the Secret Bunker - a part of the tunnel system of Area A of Hanoi Citadel, built during the heroic years of the resistance war against the US to save the country of the Vietnamese people. The Secret Bunker plays an important role in helping the General Headquarters of the Vietnam People's Army maintain command, control and direction over the military branches and fronts in the conditions of the US Air Force fiercely attacking the capital Hanoi. Here, viewers will see documentary images of officers and soldiers who worked in the bunker, secret telegrams...

Mr. Tran Xuan Thanh, one of the visitors to the exhibition with his two sons, shared: “This is the first time I have brought my children to visit the strategic tunnels at Thang Long Imperial Citadel. The historical documents and images displayed here not only help the younger generation understand more about the nation’s history, but also inspire in them pride and love for their homeland and country.”

According to Director of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center Nguyen Thanh Quang, the Secret Cellar was researched and restored based on the principle of respecting the original elements, without interfering with the original relic. The documents and artifacts displayed here were also collected and researched to maximize the value of the relic, creating a new mark for the Imperial Citadel to attract visitors, especially young people.

Evaluating the exhibition series at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc Cuong, President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, said that the revolutionary relics of House and Bunker D67, and the Cipher Bunker - General Staff Department are an important component of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site during the Ho Chi Minh era, with special value in the resistance war against the US.

"These revolutionary relics are one of the criteria contributing to the recognition of Thang Long Imperial Citadel by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage. The work of preserving and promoting the value of revolutionary relics aims to educate the tradition of patriotism, the spirit of great solidarity, the desire for peace, the will to be self-reliant, self-reliant, self-respect, and national pride; to express deep gratitude to the generations who sacrificed their blood for national independence and unification; to affirm the determination of the entire Party, people, and army in the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland," said Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc Cuong.

In addition to the exhibition and opening of the strategic tunnel, the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center also organized the exhibition "Hanoi Flag Tower/Flag Tower - Fatherland and the desire for peace" at the Hanoi Flag Tower space to honor and promote the value of an important historical relic, a place that preserves the cultural and spiritual values of the people of the capital and the Vietnamese nation. The exhibition will open to visitors on September 1.
