On May 26, South Korea reported that North Korea launched several projectiles, including ballistic missiles, off its western coast, the latest in a series of tests this year. The missiles traveled approximately 80 kilometers.
Many analysts believe that by conducting a series of missile tests in recent months, Pyongyang may be trying to take advantage of the weakening of international norms to strengthen its nuclear position.

According to an English-language report by the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea's latest launch "analyzed and assessed the power of the tactical ballistic missile's special warhead, the reliability of the 240mm guided artillery missile with extended range using a super-precise automatic guidance system."
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated: "The main weapons system is a clear signal of the upgrading of our military forces and an event demonstrating remarkable technological progress."
The North Korean leader also emphasized that the fire control and automation systems of all launch vehicles have been upgraded to suit modern combat conditions, thereby increasing their practical application in combat.
According to him, thanks to the successful development of the most powerful tactical weapon systems, the North Korean military's firepower is now based on "automation, long range, and super precision."
In March, South Korea also reported that North Korea launched more than 10 ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan while U.S. and South Korean military forces were conducting joint exercises. Similarly, the Japanese Coast Guard detected what appeared to be ballistic missiles that had fallen into the sea.
