(Dan Tri) - 2024 is the fourth consecutive year that global English proficiency has declined. Notably, the English proficiency trend of Vietnamese people has dropped by 5 levels, falling into the low proficiency group.
That is the result from the announcement of the 2024 Global English Proficiency Index (EPI) byEducation First Vietnam (EF Vietnam) on November 13.
This is the world's largest survey of English skills by country and region, covering more than 110 countries and territories, and has been evaluated and ranked prestigiously worldwide, published annually since 2011.
This year's EPI is based on test results from 2.1 million non-native English speakers aged 18 and over in 116 countries and territories.

The results show that Vietnam's English proficiency index this year reached 498 points, ranking 63rd out of 116 countries and territories assessed and in the group with low proficiency levels.
Specifically, among countries and territories in Asia, Vietnam ranked 8th, behind Singapore (609 points), Philippines (570), Malaysia (566), Hong Kong (China) (549), South Korea (523), Nepal (512) and Bangladesh (500). Last year, our country ranked 58/113.
In early October, IELTS co-organizers recently announced data related to the global IELTS exam in 2023-2024, in which the average IELTS score of Vietnamese people is 6.2, down 5 levels compared to 2022, listening and speaking skills decreased by 0.1 points, lower than the world average.
It is worth mentioning that this result "ends" the 2-year achievement of Vietnam's English proficiency index rising to the average level.
In 2022, Vietnam "escaped" the low English proficiency group when it scored 502/800 points, ranking 60th in the world, up 5 places compared to the previous year. Last year, Vietnam ranked 58/113, up two places.
The EF report also found that English proficiency levels around the world are declining. This is the fourth consecutive year that global English proficiency has declined, with 60% of the countries in the index scoring lower than they did in 2023.
Notably, today, the emergence of artificial intelligence and large language models has brought many benefits to English learners such as practice, explanation, and error correction without causing learners to feel embarrassed.
According to the EF organization, thanks to the effectiveness of these AI tools, the English proficiency assessment indexes of Vietnam and the world can increase over time.
In addition, the report shows that the service, aviation, media, sports and entertainment industries are the industries with the highest English proficiency levels.
For many professionals, despite high levels of professional experience, lower-than-average English proficiency is a barrier to career advancement and access to information. Executive-level personnel in Asia have lower EPI scores than those in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
On the other hand, women’s English proficiency has remained stable while men’s has declined. Africa is the only continent where women have consistently outperformed men in English, and it is also the region where women have improved the most. According to some analyses, women are more chatty and sociable than men, so they have more opportunities to practice and master the language.
