Bixby has been a part of Samsung Galaxy smartphones for the past seven years, starting with the launch of the Galaxy S8 series. It brought some groundbreaking features at the time, like live translation and restaurant recommendations.
However, this virtual voice assistant relies on users asking questions and finding answers from the internet with simple commands. Bixby doesn't have the same capabilities as Open AI's ChatGPT or Google Gemini, which can generate new text and images in response to your queries.

The Bixby virtual assistant isn't as powerful as some other virtual assistants, but Samsung is always looking to change that. They see Bixby as a way to control all your Samsung devices, from your phone to your home appliances, so making it smarter is a big deal.
Now, if you're a fan of Bixby, there's good news for you. Samsung is beefing up its virtual assistant by incorporating generative AI technology. According to Won-joon Choi, Samsung's executive vice president of mobile, the company is "working very hard" to make it happen, but there's no official timeline yet.
“ With the emergence of generative AI technology and advanced large language models, I believe we have to redefine the role of Bixby ,” Won-joon Choi added.
Won-joon Choi also said that Bixby is the "core virtual voice assistant" and wants to ensure that any additions from AI technology created in it "allow conversations to become more natural, intelligent, and easily applied to support products in the Samsung ecosystem".
This will essentially make Bixby a lot more fun. Imagine asking your phone to write a poem or describe a funny cat video and Bixby can come up with something, using this new AI platform.
Additionally, Bixby becoming Samsung's exclusive, beefed-up virtual assistant will foster healthy competition between Google Assistant and Apple's Siri, the other two giants in the smartphone virtual assistant space.
