High income from growing durian
Mr. Chau Van Han’s family (Cat Tan village, Ia Bang commune) grows 250 durian trees according to VietGAP standards on an area of 1.5 hectares. Last year, his family harvested 32 tons of durian and is expected to harvest about 35 tons this year.
Mr. Han shared: "Previously, my family mainly grew coffee, pepper and intercropped a little durian. However, when I saw that durian trees were highly profitable , I converted the entire area to grow this type of tree, using Monthong and Dona varieties.
When I started growing durian trees, I learned and applied technical care processes according to VietGAP standards, so the garden yielded 1-2.5 quintals of fruit per tree.
The price of durian sold at the garden is about 80,000 VND/kg, but I have not set a price yet because there are still about 3 weeks left until harvest. However, with the current price, after deducting expenses, my family will make a profit of about 2.4 billion VND."

Mr. Do Pham Chi Cong (in the same village) commented: "Currently, the information that Thailand's durian crop has failed due to unfavorable weather has helped farmers become more optimistic about the possibility that the price of this fruit will continue to increase. With 2 hectares of durian, I estimate that this crop's output will reach about 20 tons."
According to Mr. Cong, durian trees bring higher economic value than other industrial crops, but this is a crop that requires high techniques and is susceptible to pests and diseases, so it is also quite risky.
Mr. Vu The Binh - Chairman of the Cat Tan Village Durian Association - said: "The association currently has 56 members with a total durian growing area of more than 80 hectares, of which 48 hectares have been harvested.
Over the years, the Farmers' Association has agreed with its members on a production plan to create products of consistent quality and large output to meet the purchasing needs of partners. Currently, the Farmers' Association is promoting the implementation of durian cultivation according to VietGAP standards and developing growing area codes.
Up to now, the Agricultural Association has had 1 growing area code accepted by China, and 2 codes are completing their documents. This year's durian crop is about to enter peak harvest.
Many key units have raised the issue of purchasing for export. With the current purchase price at the garden of about 80,000 VND/kg, farmers will have high profits.

Prospects for increased exports
Chu Prong district currently has about 1,200 hectares of durian, of which the commercial area is about 710 hectares, with a yield of 14.8 tons/ha and an output of nearly 11,000 tons/year. The district has also been granted 8 durian growing area codes with an area of about 160 hectares, concentrated in Chu Prong town and the communes of Ia Bang, Ia Phin, and Ia Kly.
Recently, Minh Phat Farms Cooperative (Chu Prong town) and Krong Pak Green Agriculture Cooperative (Dak Lak province) signed a cooperation agreement to export durian to the Chinese market.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Minh Phat Farms Cooperative - said: "According to the signed contract, Krong Pak Green Agriculture Cooperative will coordinate to provide technical guidance, purchase and export durian to China.
This year's harvest, Krong Pak Green Agriculture Cooperative will purchase about 900 tons of durian, of which 700 tons will be purchased in Chu Prong and 200 tons will be purchased in Chu Pah.
Currently, Minh Phat Farms Cooperative has 25 members growing 30 hectares of durian according to VietGAP standards. This entire area has been coded for growing areas since 2022. Export cooperation will open up opportunities for sustainable development of the durian industry, increasing farmers' income.
In addition to Minh Phat Farms Cooperative, in Chu Prong district there is also a company that purchases and exports durian to China. This will help people sell their products at good prices through linking production and consumption of products.
Mr. Pham Tien Dung - Representative of Hoang Suu Agricultural Import-Export Company (Ia Phin Commune, Chu Prong District, Gia Lai Province) said: Previously, when the direct export procedures had not been completed, the Company coordinated with other units to purchase durian for export. Currently, the Company has purchased from traders and gardeners in the area to package and export directly to China.
To have a quality source of goods, from the beginning of the season, the Company has supported planting and care techniques, sold fertilizers and agricultural materials, and committed to purchasing stable output, so people have great confidence. It is estimated that this year, the Company will purchase and export to China more than 10,000 tons of durian.
“Compared to other agricultural products, this year, durian prices are quite high, so farmers are very excited. Currently, durian grades A and B are priced at 90-94 thousand VND/kg, the rest are priced at around 45 thousand VND/kg,” Mr. Dung added.
