Whether it's raining heavily and flooding or sunny and arid, the Ea Nuôl and Buôn Đôn areas of Đắk Lắk province struggle to grow industrial crops. Seeking a way to prosper on their homeland, a group of young people in Ea Nuôl commune boldly planted peony grapes, transforming the disadvantages of the weather and soil into strengths in agricultural production.
“In 2021, the group started planting some grapevines on a trial basis and found that they adapted well to the soil and grew successfully. Later, they introduced several new varieties for experimentation and found that they also thrived. Due to the significant temperature difference between day and night in the Buon Don region, a difference of over 10 degrees Celsius during the winter-spring season makes the grapes more fragrant and sweeter,” said Vo Hoai An, the technical officer in charge of the vineyard.
From the initial experimental model, the 1.8-hectare vineyard with 10,000 grapevines is now yielding a harvest. Nguyen Quoc Lap, one of the investors who contributed capital and labor to the vineyard, said that after overcoming many difficulties in soil improvement, investing in a greenhouse system, and applying science and technology, the vineyard has yielded an average of 10 tons per year in over 3 years. Grapes sell for 400,000 VND/kg, but orders are high, and at times the vineyard runs out of grapes to sell, so the future prospects for this type of grape remain promising.
"If everything goes smoothly and the farmers here are willing to cooperate and work together with me, I'm sure this will become the specialized area for growing peony grapes in our province," Nguyen Quoc Lap confidently stated.
The group of young people leveraged social media to introduce their model of growing peony grapes to a wider audience. During harvest time, hundreds of rows of straight, lush green vines laden with fruit attracted numerous visitors.
“I’ve traveled to many places, from the strawberry gardens of Da Lat to the grape vineyards of Ninh Thuan, but when I return to my hometown and see the fresh, delicious grapes, I still feel very happy. I hope that our locality will have more vineyards like this to develop the economy, as well as to become an attractive tourist destination for visitors,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang shared.
According to Ms. Dinh Thuy Lang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ea Nuol commune, Buon Don district, the initial success of the peony grape cultivation model has opened up new directions for local farmers.
“The grape cultivation model offers many benefits. First, it represents a shift in the crop structure, as the new varieties are very suitable for the soil in Ea Nuôl commune. Besides that, the model also creates a direction for agricultural tourism development, which is one of the development directions aligned with the district's orientation. Going forward, the locality will continue to research and introduce this model to farmers in the communes so that more people can access it, guiding the locality to develop agriculture and transform the crop structure more effectively,” Ms. Lăng said.
