Midlands - Poems by Dinh Le Vu

Where I live
Open your eyes and you see mountains and forests.
A clear morning
Because of the birdsong…

The hen clucked, calling her chicks from below the steps of the stilt house.
The pig with the hunched back grunts, demanding food in the kitchen.
The air was filled with the delicious aroma of roasted sweet potatoes.
My mother woke up early and buried herself in the still-warm ashes of the kitchen fire from the night before.

He was a stranger passing through.
He felt sorry for the children with their very dark eyes, huddled together, looking at him shyly.
I feel sorry for that old, thin coat that isn't warm enough on a windy day.
I love the way their mouths widen with eager anticipation as he teaches the children to spell their first words…

He escaped from the city and came here.
Dizzy with the warmth of human connection.
A vegetarian dinner served to guests by the flickering firelight of the stilt house.
Your smile is pure, your joy sparkles with purity…

He felt himself dissolving into the clear, pristine midland...
