This move is made to reduce the situation of international students studying at schools with very low rankings to create "shortcuts", improve their profiles, and promote their career advancement.
According to SCMP news (China), the country's Ministry of Education has begun to release a list of universities that need to carefully review graduates' degrees.
Chinese authorities have begun to tighten control over the quality of degrees awarded to international students (Photo: SCMP).
This control is implemented to limit the situation of a group of Chinese students who want to have the "label" of studying abroad. They register to study at unknown schools with very easy admission conditions. When having the "label" of studying abroad and having a degree issued by a foreign country, these people often have an advantage in the job application process.
The verification process for overseas study degrees in China began this August. According to the authorities of the Chinese Ministry of Education, the verification process for each case takes at least 10 days. In cases where verification is difficult, the process can last up to more than 60 days.
The criteria for evaluating prestigious and quality universities are set by Chinese authorities based on the annual rankings of world universities conducted by Times Higher Education magazine (UK).
Universities that Chinese authorities have placed on the watch list are those that do not appear in the rankings or do appear but are ranked 1,500 or lower.
In recent years, many young Chinese people choose to study abroad at universities with easy training processes and few entry criteria.
In this way, they are still considered international students, with additional master's and doctoral degrees awarded by foreign universities. Thanks to that, their competitive opportunities are better when applying for jobs.
Currently, to meet the diverse needs of learners, many international universities have opened distance learning courses, studying the entire program online. Learners only need to pay the full tuition fee, the conditions set for those pursuing this type of course are usually quite simple.
Many Chinese people have sought out such courses so that they do not have to take time off work during their studies, and also get a degree from a foreign school.
On this issue, the Chinese Ministry of Education also detailed that international students need to participate in a training program with 90% of the time spent studying directly at school, only then will their degrees be valid.
Online courses or courses with online learning time exceeding 10% of the learner's study time will be considered as substandard qualifications.
Currently, the labor market in China is very competitive. Employees who are employed also need to constantly improve their abilities, they even compete with each other in the number of degrees to reduce the risk of falling into the category of personnel reduction.
