China confirms order for 200 Boeing aircraft from the US.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that the procurement package includes 200 Boeing aircraft, along with engines and related parts. According to the ministry, aviation is a key area for deepening economic cooperation between China and the United States. The agreement was reached after consensus between the leaders of the two countries, following US President Donald Trump's recent visit to China and meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Although the order size is lower than analysts' expectations, it is still a notable sign of cooling down in US-China trade relations and opens the possibility of increased demand from Chinese airlines.

If the order for over 500 aircraft materializes, it would be the largest aircraft purchase in aviation history, surpassing even IndiGo's contract for 500 Airbus narrow-body aircraft. However, it is likely that China's order will be allocated to the country's three major state-owned airlines.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp were among the U.S. business leaders accompanying President Trump to China to push for trade deals and resolve business disputes. For China, such a large order would help secure transport capacity to continue expanding its aviation market, especially as its domestic Comac C919 narrow-body aircraft program has yet to meet ambitious production targets. The deal could also help Boeing close the gap with rival Airbus, which has significantly expanded its presence in the Chinese market in recent years.

This is also seen as a much-needed victory for US President Donald Trump, given that his tough tariff policies and trade measures have so far failed to significantly reduce the large US trade deficit.
