On the afternoon of November 24, the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army held a ceremony to award the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces to former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly , Lieutenant General Dang Quan Thuy.
Mr. Dang Quan Thuy was born in 1928 in Xuan Hong commune, Xuan Truong district, Nam Dinh province. In October 1944, while still a student at Buoi school (now Chu Van An school), he joined the Viet Minh Front, regularly studying documents, especially the newspaper Cuu Quoc and basic training documents on the Vietnamese revolution and communism.
In addition to political activities, he also studied military affairs such as learning martial arts, using knives, sticks, using pistols and learning how to fight guerrilla warfare; actively propagandizing to other students, distributing leaflets about Viet Minh in classes...
He then joined the army and participated in the resistance war against the French in Buon Ma Thuot, Central Highlands.
During the battle with the enemy, Mr. Dang Quan Thuy was wounded and taken to the North for treatment. Immediately after recovering, he was mobilized to fight in the Northwest battlefield in the Viet Bac Autumn-Winter Campaign (1947); Border Campaign (1950), Northwest Campaign (1952-1953) and Dien Bien Phu Campaign (1954).
With his combat experience and his acumen, dedication and responsibility, he analyzed and assessed the enemy situation and the battlefield situation accurately and promptly, helping the Command and Commander-in-Chief Vo Nguyen Giap make turning-point decisions, changing the situation on the battlefield.
Mr. Dang Quan Thuy has held many important positions: Commander of the Chemical Corps, Deputy Commander, Commander of Military Region 2; Member of the Party Central Committee, 7th tenure, National Assembly Delegate, 8th, 9th, 10th tenure; Vice Chairman of the National Assembly and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Committee; Vice Chairman, Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Association.
He made many important contributions to the cause of national liberation, building and firmly defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
On October 17, the President signed a decision to confer the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces on Lieutenant General Dang Quan Thuy.
