Dutch midfielder sees psychologist after being benched at Euro 2024

In the 2023-2024 season, De Ligt is a mainstay of Bayern Munich, playing a total of 30 times in all competitions with nearly 2,000 minutes of play. He won the starting position despite having to compete with other excellent central defenders such as Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae or Eric Dier.

However, at Euro 2024, the 24-year-old centre-back has not played a single minute in the first two matches of the Netherlands. De Ligt is only a backup option for the duo Stefan de Vrij and Virgil van Dijk.

The Bayern Munich star admitted that he is extremely eager to play at Euro 2024. On June 24, before the match against Austria, De Ligt said he had confided in a psychologist to relieve his stress.

"It's not easy at times like this. Talking about it helps me feel better and I can focus all my energy on the pitch instead of wasting it on negative thoughts.

Whether I play or not, I always try to train to improve myself every day. I am happy to see the team win but it is more fulfilling to be on the field and contribute to the team.

"I feel like I'm in good form for Bayern in the second half. I want to continue that form at Euro 2024, so having to sit on the bench all the time makes me feel disappointed," De Ligt told Dutch media.

De Ligt was always a priority for the Dutch national team. He started in the opening match of the "Orange storm" at the 2022 World Cup. However, after making a mistake, he was put on the bench by coach Louis van Gaal in the following matches. Since then, De Ligt has become a "close friend" of the bench in the Dutch national team.

The Netherlands will have their final Euro 2024 group stage match against Austria at 11pm on June 25. The “Orange Storm” will certainly qualify for the round of 16 if they do not lose to their opponents.
