Fisherman Ho Van Hung (Quynh Phu commune) said: “Storm No. 5 is likely to have a direct impact, we received a notice from the government so we took the opportunity to bring our boat back early. Returning to shore early means less income, but the most important thing is to preserve our property and lives. Currently, my boat is securely tied up.”

Mr. Ho Anh Son - Head of Lach Quen fishing port said: Since the afternoon of August 23, all of the more than 90 fishing boats of fishermen have actively returned, anchored in Lach Quen area and safely returned to shore. However, we recommend that people clean up all fishing gear, as well as other items, to avoid damage due to storms.

Not only fishermen of Quynh Luu district (old), at Lach Van fishing port of Dien Chau commune and other fishing ports, thousands of ships and boats have come to anchor. The functional forces, especially the Nghe An Border Guard, have been present for many days to guide fishermen to arrange their boats, tie anchor ropes, and prevent the boats from colliding when strong winds occur.

Not only focusing on large ships and boats, people in coastal areas are also busy cleaning up their belongings, reinforcing their houses, pulling rafts onto the road, avoiding high waves. At Dien Thanh beach, Dien Chau commune, where many households make a living from running restaurants, they are urgently cleaning up tables, chairs, tarpaulins... removing all decorative light bulbs... to avoid damage.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuy - a restaurant owner shared: "Hearing the news of the storm, my family mobilized relatives to clean up all the tables and chairs, floor coverings, and decorative electrical systems. In addition, we also secured the corrugated iron roof."

In the coastal areas of Hai Chau and Dien Chau communes, fishermen are busy pulling their rafts ashore to avoid the waves. Observations show that fishermen use tractors and excavators to pull their rafts from the sea to shore. Fisherman Nguyen Trong Binh in Hai Chau commune said: Rafts are easily damaged by waves, so before the storm hits, his family hires a tractor to pull the rafts up to the road surface for safety.

Mr. Nguyen Van Loi - Chairman of Dien Chau Commune People's Committee said: Before the storm, the local government increased propaganda work, mobilizing people to cut tree branches, brace houses, especially the restaurant business area at Dien Thanh beach. The forces also checked the dyke system and drainage culverts to ensure safety against heavy rain.

"Green home is better than old field"

In some summer-autumn rice fields, farmers are actively harvesting with the motto "green at home is better than ripe in the fields". Mr. Tran Ngoc Bich in Minh Chau commune said: My family has 4 sao of summer-autumn rice, although the rice is only 70% ripe, we still harvest before the storm comes. Because the fields are deep, the machine cannot go down, so the family mobilizes manpower to harvest in 2 days (August 23 and 24). If we do not harvest, the storm will cause heavy rain and flooding, the rice will sprout. Therefore, we must harvest at any cost.

Mr. Le The Hieu - Vice Chairman of Minh Chau Commune People's Committee said: This summer-autumn crop, the whole commune planted nearly 1,800 hectares of rice. 3 days ago, after receiving information that storm No. 5 would make landfall in Nghe An, the local government propagated and mobilized people to urgently harvest with the motto "green house is better than old field". By noon on August 24, farmers in the commune had harvested about 1,500 hectares; the remaining area of about 300 hectares was still green and on high fields, so people could not harvest.

In the coming hours, Nghe An will continue to deploy urgent measures to respond to storm No. 5, from checking lakes, dams, and irrigation works to preparing rescue forces. With the initiative and solidarity of the entire political system and people, damage will be minimized and the lives and property of coastal residents will be protected.
