Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is a project to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi with a total investment of nearly 430 billion VND. The school was inaugurated and opened in 2010 with an area of 5 hectares including 3 large and small halls; 3 rows of classrooms and functional rooms, modern gymnasium..., meeting the teaching requirements of the leading specialized school in Hanoi.

After a period of operation, many places in the buildings were leaking and stagnant. In 2022, the school was invested by the City People's Committee to build and renovate the items. The project was assigned to the Hanoi City Civil Works Construction Investment Project Management Board as the investor with more than 90 billion VND, using the city budget.
After surveying the current state of degradation of the Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, the consulting unit proposed the items and volume of renovation and repair of the school including: Building B1, Building B2, Building B3, multi-purpose building, administration building, hall, sports hall, library, surrounding infrastructure, environmental treatment - building 2 new wastewater treatment tank clusters.
In 2023, the school was renovated and repaired by various units. However, after many months of renovation, the project has not improved, and the school has not been able to accept it for use.
Many items are unsafe
Ms. Bui Thi Hoai Thanh, a Literature teacher at the school, said that teachers cannot imagine how to fix and repair the items, but on rainy days, moving between buildings to get to classes is very difficult. She has just changed her clothes, going from one block of houses to another, sometimes getting completely wet.
"The school focuses on club activities, extracurricular activities as well as sports, but the gym has been closed for a long time. Teachers and students are looking forward to the quick completion of repairs so as not to affect the teaching and training activities of students," said Ms. Thanh.

The physical education teacher said that the school's modern gymnasium can accommodate up to 400 students and can accommodate 8-10 classes for badminton, shuttlecock, and basketball at the same time. Before the renovation, the gymnasium leaked whenever it rained, but after the renovation, the situation not only did not improve but also became worse. During the heavy rains caused by storm No. 11, water from the roof flowed down, turning the floor into a pond. Now, the water has receded, but stains still remain on the floor.
“The repair has been going on for a long time but the project has not been accepted yet, so since then, even though the gym has been closed, the students have no place to study,” said the teacher.

According to Tien Phong reporters at Hanoi Amsterdam High School for the Gifted on the morning of October 16, many walls were peeling and leaking. On the ground floor, where there are functional rooms such as the gym, medical room, etc., water was seeping through many concrete columns and beams.
On the first floor, there were many puddles of water, flowing everywhere, creating a dirty and filthy scene. According to the school security guard, the water pipes from the upper floors were not underground but flowed straight down to the first floor, so even though the staff cleaned it up, the water flowed all over the floor.
Even in the third floor library, the newly renovated bathroom wall is peeling off in large pieces. Library staff said that the water on the bathroom floor after the renovation was stagnant and could not drain out.

In particular, hall 700 is where many events of the school and the Hanoi Department of Education and Training are held, but on October 19, a very dangerous incident occurred. A 22 kg wall tile near the roof fell down, stuck straight into the seat surface and tore it apart. The ceramic tiled wall was also roughly glued, and the school security guard used his hands to easily remove each tile.
The school representative said that the luckiest thing was that there were no events or activities that day, otherwise the consequences would have been unpredictable. Too worried, the school put up warning ropes and temporarily closed the auditorium for repairs.

Ms. Duong Tu Anh, Vice Principal of the school, said that in 2023, the City will create favorable conditions for the school to invest in a medium-term investment package to repair and upgrade a number of items. After the repair period, the school has not been able to accept the project for use because after two storms No. 10 and 11, many places have been found to be leaking, and the paint on the walls has peeled off.
“The school hopes that the Project Management Board will cooperate to re-inspect and monitor the entire quality of the project, find the cause and promptly fix it to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff,” said Ms. Tu Anh.
