The High School for the Gifted was established in 1996 and is a specialized high school directly under the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. The school's name omits the word "high school" to distinguish it from other high schools under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

Following the merger, Ho Chi Minh City has 5 specialized high schools, of which 4 are under the direct management of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and 1 is under the direct management of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
