After winning the 2024 ASEAN Cup with the national team, coach Kim Sang-sik continued to lead U23 Vietnam to the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship. In both tournaments, Indonesian football became the victim, making the name Kim Sang-sik now a "new nightmare" for the media and fans of the archipelago.
Banyumas Media emphasized: “This is not the first time Indonesian football has failed under coach Kim Sang-sik. Six months ago, the national team lost 0-1 to Vietnam in the ASEAN Cup. Now it is the turn of U23 Indonesia to fall at home in the final of the U23 Southeast Asian tournament.”
The author of the article describes the Korean strategist as more talented than Coach Park Hang-seo: “Both have repeatedly made Indonesian football suffer. However, Kim Sang-sik is calm and has a more concise and effective tactical approach.”
In the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23, despite playing at home, U23 Indonesia was completely helpless against U23 Vietnam. "Even the main striker Jens Raven had no chance to perform. U23 Vietnam played tightly, disciplined and did not give the opponent any space," Banyumas Media commented.
Not only disappointed with the result, Indonesian fans also expressed their anger by "bombarding" social media with comments from the President of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir. A series of accounts demanded the return of coach Shin Tae-yong, criticizing the decision to fire him as a "strategic mistake".
Media outlets such as JPNN and TVOneNews also reflected the cooling of public opinion towards the country’s football. Many felt their trust had been betrayed after the consecutive failures. “PSSI has been criticized for its use of people, its narrow vision and lack of long-term planning,” one article commented.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese football seems to be returning to a stable trajectory. Under coach Kim Sang-sik, the national teams are more disciplined, flexible and effective, especially in defense and tactical organization.
In less than a year, the Korean coach has brought home two regional titles. This is not only the result of reasonable tactics, but also an affirmation of the promising generational transition in Vietnamese football. In the hands of coach Kim Sang-sik is a group of potential young players, trained systematically and ready to aim for further goals such as the U23 Asian qualifiers or the 33rd SEA Games.
