According to US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, TSMC has begun manufacturing advanced 4-nanometer chips in Arizona for US customers.
In November 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce finalized a $6.6 billion grant for TSMC's U.S. unit to manufacture semiconductors in Phoenix, Arizona.

"For the first time in history, we are producing advanced 4-nanometer chips on American soil. American workers are working on par with Taiwan (China) in terms of productivity and quality. This is a huge achievement, unprecedented in our history. Many people said it was impossible," Raimondo said about the previously undisclosed production of smart chips.
A spokesperson for TSMC, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer and a major supplier to Apple and Nvidia, declined to provide specific information when contacted by Reuters yesterday (January 10).
In April 2024, TSMC agreed to expand its planned investment by an additional $25 billion to $65 billion and add a third factory in Arizona by 2030.
The U.S. Congress passed a $52.7 billion semiconductor research and manufacturing subsidy program in 2022. The U.S. Department of Commerce had previously persuaded all five of the world's leading semiconductor companies to locate their manufacturing plants in the U.S. as part of the program.
Ms. Raimondo previously told Reuters that the U.S. Commerce Department had to spend considerable effort and time to persuade TSMC to move forward with its U.S. manufacturing plans. "It didn't happen naturally... We had to convince TSMC that if they wanted to grow, if they wanted to expand... then they should open a factory in our country," Ms. Raimondo revealed.
TSMC will manufacture the world's most advanced two-nanometer technology at its second plant in Arizona, which is expected to begin production in 2028. TSMC has also agreed to use its most advanced chip manufacturing technology, codenamed "A16," in Arizona.
In addition to massive government funding, the U.S. Department of Commerce also provided TSMC with a low-cost loan of up to $5 billion to manufacture advanced chips in the country.
Ms. Raimondo wants the United States to produce 20% of the world's leading logic chips by 2030 – up from 0% before TSMC began manufacturing in Arizona.
In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that TSMC expected to begin mass production at its first U.S.-based plant in the first half of 2025.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce finalized a $407 million grant to help fund Amkor Technology's $2 billion advanced semiconductor packaging facility in Arizona, which is expected to be the largest of its kind in the United States.
When fully operational, Amkor's Arizona plant will package and test millions of chips for autonomous vehicles, 5G/6G, and data centers. Apple will be their first and largest customer, with chips manufactured at a nearby TSMC facility.
