While the final match in the junior high school category was tense and fiercely contested between the neighboring teams of Binh Thuy and Cai Khe wards, in the elementary school category, the Vinh Phuoc ward team captivated the audience with their skillful and emotional play. In the final match against Truong Xuan commune, the young players from Vinh Phuoc ward played confidently and coordinated seamlessly to win 3-0, thus convincingly claiming the gold medal.
In that lineup, player number 10 - Cong Quang Minh - was smaller in stature than his teammates on the field, but he played outstandingly. The 4th-grade student from Vinh Tan 2 Primary School, with his tricky playing style that caused many difficulties for the opposing defense, directly scored the opening goal, breaking the deadlock. Quang Minh said he likes playing football because "I get to play with my friends and it's very fun." After each school day, he and his friends go to the field together to practice.
But the football field used by Quang Minh and his friends at Vinh Tan 2 Primary School is actually a rice field next to the school, which Mr. Kim Hong Thanh, the school's physical education teacher, has repurposed as a playground for his students. Mr. Hong Thanh recounted: "The school doesn't have a football field, so we have to practice in the rice field. The children love playing football so much that they practice enthusiastically every day."
According to teacher Kim Hong Thanh, the Vinh Phuoc ward elementary school football team was selected from the Vinh Tan 2 Elementary School's football tournament held on the occasion of the November 20th Teachers' Day last year, and most of the players are 4th graders. Since then, after school, the children gather on the field to play for about half an hour. The conditions are still lacking, but in return, they possess a very innocent and passionate spirit.
"Some parents work until late in the evening before returning home. They are very happy to see their children practicing football and socializing with friends," Mr. Thanh shared.
When the Vinh Phuoc ward team gathered in Can Tho city center to participate in this year's tournament, their main objective was simply to socialize and promote the sport. However, with each match, the progress of the young players surprised even their teachers. From running on the rice paddies, they played with increasing confidence, eventually going all the way to the championship.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Thanh, Head of the Football Refereeing Team, this is the first student sports competition in Can Tho City after the administrative boundary merger, hence its large scale and high professional quality. This year's football competition has 96 participating teams, with 40 of them from primary schools alone.
“Many teams from distant locations participated very actively and received thorough preparation. The matches were lively and exciting, with many being decided by penalty shootouts. Overall, the professional quality was high and the competition was conducted in the true spirit of fair play,” Mr. Thanh commented.
From the fierce matches between traditionally strong teams like Binh Thuy ward, to the emotional championship journey of the Vinh Phuoc ward primary school team, the 2026 Can Tho City High School Football Tournament has concluded with many beautiful memories. It's not just about the medals, but also the joy of school life, the support of teachers and parents, and the growing dreams of football nurtured through school sports.
