World market developments
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's movements against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 0.44%, currently at 98.65.
The dollar rose ahead of a highly anticipated speech by US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on August 22. Investors will closely assess the speech for further clues on the possibility of the Fed cutting interest rates next month.
Traders have increased bets on the Fed cutting interest rates at its meeting on September 16-17 after a disappointing July jobs report. However, the risk of higher inflation as the Trump administration imposes new tariffs remains a "no-brainer" that has some policymakers cautious.
The theme of this year's Jackson Hole conference is “Labor Markets in Transition.”
“I think the question is how much Powell will emphasize the cracks in the labor market,” said Eric Theoret, a foreign exchange strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto.
Data like payrolls, revisions and rising jobless claims are all stories that Mr. Powell can exploit, he said.
The euro fell 0.34% to $1.1611. The Japanese yen lost 0.65% to $148.29. The British pound also fell 0.27% to $1.342.
Economists at Goldman Sachs predict Mr. Powell will adjust his message from the Fed meeting in July 2025, when he said the Fed was in a “good position” to wait for more information before acting.
