The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 100.83 - down 1.03 points compared to May 15, 2025.

The Commerce Department said retail sales rose just 0.1% last month, after a revised 1.7% gain in March. That was slightly higher than analysts had expected (which were unchanged), but significantly lower than the previously reported 1.5% gain. The March surge was largely driven by purchases of items like cars before President Donald Trump announced tariffs on April 2.

In a separate report, the US Labor Department said its producer price index (PPI) for final demand fell 0.5% in April, a sharp decline after being revised to unchanged in March.

However, other data from the Labor Department showed weekly jobless claims remained steady at 229,000, in line with forecasts, despite the job market recording increasingly limited hiring opportunities.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, fell 0.25% to 100.75. The euro rose 0.27% to $1.1204.

Earlier in the week, the USD rose more than 1% after the US and China reached a 90-day agreement to suspend tariffs on most of each other's goods, temporarily easing concerns about a global recession.

Investors have lowered their expectations for a rate cut by the US Federal Reserve this year as trade tensions ease. Markets are now pricing in a 75.4% chance of at least a 25 basis point cut at the September meeting, down from a previous expectation of a July cut, according to LSEG data.

Recent comments from Fed officials suggest the central bank needs more time and data to assess the impact of tariffs on prices and the economy before making policy changes.

In his speech on Thursday, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell did not directly mention monetary policy or the economic outlook, but emphasized that the Fed needs to reconsider key factors related to employment and inflation in the policy-making process, especially after the inflation fluctuations of the past few years.

The dollar fell 0.67% to 145.77 yen against the Japanese yen, while the pound strengthened 0.28% to 1.3296 dollars after the UK economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter of 2025.
