USD exchange rate today in the world
The US dollar rebounded strongly on Thursday after a volatile trading session on Wednesday, when US President Donald Trump denied reports that he planned to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
The dollar has gained this month, which analysts say is largely due to repositioning after a sharp sell-off earlier in the year. The dollar index is still down 9% year to date. Rising U.S. Treasury yields this month are supporting the greenback’s rally.
The dollar extended gains on Thursday after data showed U.S. retail sales rebounded more than expected in June, while initial jobless claims fell last week.
Investors are weighing a number of factors that could influence the market's direction, including the economic impact of Trump's tariff policies, the U.S. fiscal and debt outlook, and the Fed's independence.
The dollar fell on Wednesday following reports that President Donald Trump was planning to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell soon, but pared losses when Trump denied the reports. Trump has repeatedly said interest rates should be at 1% or lower.
Former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, seen as a potential candidate to replace Mr. Powell, has argued for a new agreement between the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve, referring to a 1951 pact that separated public debt management from monetary policy.
The euro fell 0.45 percent against the dollar to $1.1582. The common currency earlier hit its lowest since June 23 at $1.1555.
In other currencies, sterling weakened after data showed wage growth in the UK slowed in May, and the number of employees fell further last month. Sterling was down 0.1% against the dollar at $1.3405.
Concerns are also growing ahead of a key election in Japan and the failure to reach a trade deal with the United States to avoid higher punitive tariffs. Polls show Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s coalition is at risk of losing its majority in the upper house.
Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday to discuss the tariffs, as Tokyo tries to avert a 25 percent levy that could be imposed if a deal is not reached by the Aug. 1 deadline. The yen fell 0.58 percent against the dollar to 148.73 yen per dollar, after hitting its weakest level since April 3.
