USD/JPY exchange rate today 5/14/2025
The USD/JPY pair is currently hovering around 147.84 USD/JPY, as the market reassesses the monetary policy outlook for Japan and the US. The Bank of Japan (BoJ) remains cautious, while the US dollar continues to show clear strength.
In yesterday's session, the USD skyrocketed, closing at 148.45, corresponding to a 2.14% increase in the day, the largest since March 2020.
However, the strong increase and falling into the "overbought" zone made BBH experts believe that USD/JPY is likely to correct or accumulate in a narrow range from 146.50 to 148.60 instead of continuing to climb immediately.
According to a summary of the April 30-May 1 BoJ meeting, members’ views showed the central bank would maintain a cautious stance. One member said the current level of uncertainty was “extremely high,” while another said it would be “timely” to see the impact of U.S. tariffs before taking action.
Swap market data show that expectations for a rate hike in Japan remain low, with only one 25 basis point hike to 0.75% expected over the next two years. This contrasts sharply with US monetary policy and is a short-term support for the US dollar.
