USD/JPY exchange rate today 5/15/2025
The USD/JPY exchange rate plummeted to 146.33. The main reason was the sharp weakening of the US dollar after the US consumer price index (CPI) data for April was released lower than expected.
The DXY index, which measures the strength of the US dollar against six major currencies, continued to fall from a monthly high of 102 to around 100.50. The data showed that the US CPI increased by just 2.3%, marking the lowest level since February 2021.
Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Austan Goolsbee said that low inflation and a new trade deal between the US and China will create conditions for the Fed to cut interest rates in the near future. However, the market is still leaning towards the possibility that the Fed will keep interest rates in the range of 4.25% - 4.50% at the July meeting.
The probability of the Fed keeping rates unchanged in July has fallen slightly to 63.3%, from 65.1% the previous day, according to the CME FedWatch tool.
In contrast to the US dollar, the Japanese yen has been showing strength in the global market. Expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) may soon raise interest rates have supported the JPY's appreciation.
BoJ Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida also expressed confidence in sustainable wage growth and inflation trends, despite the global economy still being affected by US tax policies.

In the "black market", the black market Japanese Yen exchange rate as of 4:30 a.m. on May 15, 2025 also increased slightly, trading around 177.68 VND/JPY.
