Yen exchange rate trend forecast
The yen has the potential to rebound if global market risks increase and the sentiment returns, but the currency’s gains are limited by the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) cautious monetary policy stance and weak domestic economic indicators to provide a clear bullish impetus.
However, some recent positive economic data from Japan is helping to strengthen the Yen. Specifically, the consumer price index (CPI) in Tokyo in May increased 3.4% compared to the same period last year. The core CPI, excluding fresh food, increased 3.6%, far exceeding expectations and remaining above the BoJ's 2% target for three consecutive months.
Meanwhile, retail sales rose 3.3% year-on-year in April, reflecting the positive impact of a nationwide wage increase. Although industrial output fell 0.9% year-on-year, the decline was smaller than expected and surveys suggested output could recover in May.
These positive signals are raising expectations that the BoJ will continue to gradually tighten monetary policy, a factor expected to further support the Yen exchange rate in the coming time.
