At the meeting of the Competition Committee of the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) held on the morning of May 21 in Bangkok (Thailand), members unanimously approved a plan to organize important tournaments in the region in late 2025 and 2026.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan, President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Head of the AFF Competition Committee. The focus of the meeting was on preparations for men's and women's football at the 33rd SEA Games taking place this December.
According to the seed grouping results, the U22 Vietnam team and the national women's team are both in the number 1 seed group at the 33rd SEA Games. This is a recognition of the efforts and achievements of Vietnamese football in recent times in both the men's and women's arenas.
The 33rd SEA Games men's football event has 11 teams participating and will be divided into three groups. Group A has 3 teams, while groups B and C each have 4 teams.
The teams are seeded based on their performance and hosting rights as follows: pot 1 includes hosts Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam; pot 2 includes Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia; pot 3 includes Timor Leste, Philippines, Laos; pot 4 includes Singapore and Brunei.
The teams will compete in a round robin format, with the top three teams and the best runner-up advancing to the semi-finals. The group stage will take place from December 3-12, with the semi-finals taking place on December 15, and the third-place match and final on December 18.
The three stadiums chosen as the competition venues are Rajamangala (Bangkok), Tinsulanonda (Songkhla) and Chiangmai 700th Anniversary Stadium (Chiangmai). Rajamangala Stadium will host the semi-finals, third-place match and final.
Notably, the AFF Competition Committee has agreed to propose organizing the final matches of the group stage at the same time to ensure fairness and professionalism.

In the women's football event, the tournament has 9 teams, divided into 3 groups, each group has 3 teams. Group 1 includes hosts Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar; group 2 includes Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore; group 3 includes Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia.
The women's football competition format is similar to the men's football competition with group stage matches taking place from December 4-13; semi-finals on December 14; third place match and final on December 17.
The matches will be played at two stadiums, Chonburi and TNSU Chonburi. Chonburi Stadium will also be the venue for the semi-finals, third-place match and final.
In addition to the plan to organize football at the 33rd SEA Games, the AFF Competition Committee also approved the schedule for important football tournaments in the region, including: the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship hosted by Vietnam from August 6-19; the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship in Indonesia from July 15-29; the 2026 Southeast Asian Championship scheduled to be held from July 25-26 and the 2025/26 Southeast Asian Club Championship from August 2025 to May 2026.
