
Ugandan officials said the decision was implemented immediately after several healthcare workers were found to have contracted the Ebola virus from patients crossing the border from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently, border crossings are only permitted in exceptional cases, such as for epidemic control efforts, transporting essential goods, or for security reasons. This move comes as the World Health Organization warns of a high risk of Ebola spreading in the region. However, the WHO also noted that closing the border could lead people to use unofficial routes, increasing the risk of the disease spreading uncontrollably.
