Ukraine launched a major counterattack in Lugansk due to heavy losses on the front line?
Ukraine's UAV attack on Lugansk is considered by experts to be just a psychological effort to compensate for the huge losses on the front line.

On the night of September 5, the Ukrainian armed forces carried out a series of drone attacks on the city of Lugansk. This is considered one of the largest airstrikes that the area has suffered in recent times. According to TASS news agency, the attack mainly targeted logistics infrastructure. A fuel depot on the outskirts of Lugansk was hit, causing a large explosion and a fire that lasted for several hours. However, air defense systems promptly intercepted and shot down at least seven other UAVs before they could reach the city center.
Military expert Andrey Marochko said the motives behind the airstrikes were not purely military. He said Kiev was suffering heavy losses along the entire front line, from eastern Ukraine to the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions. “Obviously, Kiev wants to prove to both its soldiers and the international public that it is still capable of conducting strikes deep into enemy territory. This is a way to strengthen the morale of its forces, whose confidence on the front line is declining,” Mr. Marochko said. Military observers also believe that the choice of Lugansk as a target was deliberate. This city is considered the political and military center of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic and has served as a safe haven for many months. The attack on this city not only causes material damage but also has a strong symbolic significance.
In addition, Kiev's use of UAVs instead of missiles or rocket artillery shows a new trend in the conflict. This type of cheap weapon is both a reconnaissance and an attack weapon, often penetrating defenses or forcing the opponent to expend a lot of effort to respond. However, expert Marochko stressed that such attacks are unlikely to turn the tide of the battle. He argued that while Kiev may score propaganda points, it is still at a disadvantage overall. Attacks on the rear may have an immediate impact, but will be difficult to sustain if Ukraine does not make a breakthrough on the main front, Mr. Marochko added. “You cannot win by launching UAVs to attack fuel depots or ammunition depots. To change the situation, they need to regain the initiative on the ground,” Marochko emphasized. On the Lugansk side, local authorities confirmed that the situation is still under control. Firefighters quickly controlled the fire at the fuel depot, preventing it from spreading to residential areas. There were no reports of major civilian casualties, although many households had to be temporarily evacuated to ensure safety.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian media reported differently, claiming that the attack had “achieved a tactical effect” by causing damage to the enemy. Pro-Kiev sources stressed that this was evidence that Russian air defense systems and separatist forces could not completely protect key targets. In fact, the information war is running parallel to the conflict. Each side seeks to exaggerate its successes and minimize its losses. Therefore, it is not easy to accurately assess the effectiveness of an airstrike. However, the common point is that UAV attacks are becoming an increasingly indispensable part of the strategies of both Russia and Ukraine.
With the latest developments, analysts predict that the conflict will escalate in the rear, putting pressure on Lugansk’s defenses and forcing Russia to adjust its forces. Kiev is likely to continue this type of attack to maintain the rhythm of the battlefield.
