Ukraine launched Privet-299 UAVs to attack Russian defense lines in Bakhmut

Ukraine's new attack in Bakhmut with the “Made in Ukraine” Privet-299 UAV shows that Kiev's precision strike capabilities are making great strides.

On August 13, 2025, according to Defense Express, the 24th Independent Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine released a video recording the moment a temporary garrison of the Russian Army in Bakhmut was destroyed by a precision strike from a Privet-299 fixed-wing drone.

This is one of the latest demonstrations of the effectiveness of the UAV warfare strategy that Ukraine is pursuing. The attack demonstrates Ukraine's combat capabilities and its development in producing its own weapons.

The accompanying video shows the UAV descending at high speed towards its target, followed immediately by a large explosion and smoke rising from the Russian troop concentration point. Although the Ukrainian side did not release casualty figures, according to analysts, the attack caused significant damage to personnel and equipment, and disrupted enemy rotational operations.

The Privet-299 is a fully fixed-wing UAV developed entirely in Ukraine, designed for long-range operations, long flight time and the ability to carry a larger payload than multirotor UAVs. This advantage allows it to carry out strike missions deep behind the front lines, where Russian defenses are often less concentrated.

Although the official specifications of this UAV have not been released, the fact that the Privet-299 was able to operate effectively in Bakhmut - one of the most fierce battlefields - proves the combat readiness and rapid deployment of this UAV. It also reflects the significant progress of the Ukrainian defense industry in the context of the conflict.

Bakhmut has long been a symbol of brutal attrition. Both Ukraine and Russia have poured massive forces into the area, as control of Bakhmut would provide significant defensive, logistical, and tactical leverage advantages. In this context, attacks on temporary Russian troop concentrations could undermine the enemy’s ability to organize defenses.

Ukraine’s strategy is clearly aimed at “eroding” the enemy’s strength through precision strikes, targeting the near rear, command centers, and troop concentrations. UAVs like the Privet-299 are at the forefront of this strategy, as they combine speed, maneuverability, and surprise.
8-8190.jpg
In addition, prioritizing the development and use of domestic UAVs not only helps Ukraine reduce its dependence on foreign aid, but also ensures its initiative in production and upgrading. In conditions of prolonged conflict, technological autonomy is a key factor in maintaining continuous combat power.
9-9592.jpg
Ukrainian military engineers worked closely with the operational forces to design, test and deploy the Privet-299 in a short period of time. This process allowed the design to be adapted to the actual requirements of the battlefield, from the weapon load, guidance system, to the ability to withstand enemy electronic jamming.
10-8253.jpg
In addition to their tactical value, attacks like the one in Bakhmut have a powerful psychological effect. Publicly releasing videos of the attacks would boost the morale of Ukrainian soldiers and send a message to the Russian military that no location is completely safe from UAVs.
11-8214.jpg
Bakhmut remains a hotly contested area, with fighting occurring almost daily. In this context, the Privet-299 and other UAVs will continue to be an important tool for Ukraine to maintain pressure, disrupt enemy supply lines, and gain incremental advantage in a long-term battle of attrition.
12-9244.jpg
If the Privet-299 deployment campaign yields positive results, Ukraine can completely expand the use of this type of UAV in many other battlefields. That will contribute to enhancing precision strike capabilities, maintaining the initiative and enhancing deterrence in the war that is entering a new challenging phase.
