Reuters reports that a team of UNESCO experts will be sent to Vietnam to assess potential risks to the conservation of Ha Long Bay , due to concerns that development projects along the coast could threaten this world natural heritage site.

"If threats to the integrity and unique characteristics that led to Ha Long Bay's inclusion on the World Heritage list are identified, UNESCO may require stringent measures to address and protect the heritage site," a UNESCO representative said.

According to this news agency, the recognition of Ha Long Bay as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site has contributed to transforming it into a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year and boosting Vietnam's tourism revenue.

However, a statement quoted from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre said there have long been concerns that the approval and implementation of new tourism projects, as well as urbanization along the coast in Ha Long City, have significantly impacted Ha Long Bay.

Speaking with a reporter from Tien Phong newspaper , a tourism expert affiliated with UNESCO stated that, over the past three decades, the magnificent beauty of Ha Long Bay has been a source of pride not only for Quang Ninh province in particular but also for Vietnam as a whole. This has helped make the bay one of the most attractive destinations on the planet.

"The UNESCO delegation to Ha Long Bay will include experts from UNESCO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)," the tourism expert revealed to a reporter from Tien Phong newspaper .

Nuno Ribeiro, a senior lecturer in tourism at RMIT University Vietnam, assesses that excessive construction is threatening the unique natural beauty, biodiversity, and ecological balance of Ha Long Bay – characteristics that have earned it UNESCO recognition.
