The story of Rang Dong Light Bulb and Thermos Flask Joint Stock Company (Rang Dong) sharing its practical experience in applying AI to production attracted attention at the "Application of AI in Manufacturing & Smart Automation" workshop organized by the Vietnam Automation Association in collaboration with the Department of Information and Statistics on May 18th in Hanoi .

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Kien, Deputy General Director of Rang Dong Light Bulb and Thermos Flask Joint Stock Company, said that in the first four months of 2026, Rang Dong achieved growth of over 25% despite the challenging global economic context. In particular, exports nearly doubled thanks to the application of AI.

"Rang Dong's export orders have almost doubled in the past four months. At times, we even jokingly said we had to 'turn away some customers' because there were so many orders."

"When businesses reach a certain level and participate in the global supply chain, huge opportunities will open up. This is concrete evidence of the effectiveness of applying AI," said the Deputy General Director of Rang Dong Light Bulb and Thermos Flask Joint Stock Company.

According to Mr. Kien, the company will begin deploying AI from the beginning of 2025. This technology is currently being widely applied in research and development, product development, technical document processing, sales support, and operational process optimization.

"To export, businesses must meet many international standards. Previously, it was very difficult to find experts with in-depth knowledge of these standards. But with AI, we can analyze and transform technical requirements into easily understandable content so that each department can implement them faster," Mr. Kien said.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Kien - Deputy General Director of Rang Dong Light Bulb and Thermos Flask Joint Stock Company, along with other delegates, participated in discussions at the workshop.

A representative from Rang Dong added that while some technical problems previously required 3-6 months to solve, now samples can be completed and sent to customers in about a month. Thanks to this, the company has for the first time exported high-standard electronic products to the US market and obtained numerous international certifications for demanding markets such as the US and Europe.

Beyond providing technical support, AI also helps process large volumes of technical documentation, international contracts, and product data that previously required highly skilled personnel with advanced language proficiency and expertise.

According to Mr. Kien, the biggest obstacles for businesses in adopting AI today lie in three issues: understanding, resources, and cost. Many businesses want to automate immediately but are hesitant in choosing the right solution.

Based on practical implementation, Rang Dong chose the roadmap of "going from simple to complex." Initially, they used readily available AI tools; then they connected multiple AI tools through APIs to create automated processes; and at a higher level, they incorporated the company's own knowledge into AI and eventually built their own AI model.

Currently, the company has developed several applications such as circuit breakers capable of detecting electrical arcs and image processing algorithms for cameras.

"The most important thing is data. AI cannot be intelligent without data. Only when businesses build digital data can they move towards advanced AI models such as Multi-modal or Agent AI," Mr. Kien emphasized.

Rang Dong's story is seen as clear evidence of the trend of AI becoming a new "lever" to promote smart manufacturing and enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese businesses.

With AI playing an increasingly central role in digital transformation and automation, many Vietnamese businesses have begun integrating this technology into their production, management, and business operations. Beyond supporting data processing, AI is gradually becoming more deeply involved in research, decision-making, process optimization, and labor productivity enhancement.

From a technological trend perspective, Mr. Duong Nguyen Binh - Standing Vice President of the Vietnam Automation Association - believes that AI is entering a new phase of development, no longer just a passive support tool, but now capable of active reasoning, planning, and decision-making.

According to Mr. Binh, the exploitation of data, processing of information, and its implementation are giving rise to the concept of an "AI Factory" - where the input is data and energy, and the output is AI applications in various fields.

"At that point, the economy will shift from being based on labor productivity to being based on computing productivity and capacity," Mr. Binh stated.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pham Dung Nam, Director of the Institute of Statistics and Scientific Evaluation, believes that two groups of businesses are currently clearly emerging: those capable of developing their own internal AI solutions and those specializing in providing AI solutions to the market.

According to Mr. Nam, many businesses have similar needs for AI, opening up opportunities for technology companies to develop shared solution packages that are more cost-effective and efficient.

At the conference, experts noted that AI is no longer a trend of the future but is becoming a practical competitive tool for businesses. However, for AI to be effective, businesses need to build a systematic data strategy, choose a suitable roadmap, and prepare a workforce ready to adapt to the new technology.
