At the Discussion Session, representatives of press agencies and journalists from the country and ASEAN shared practices and experiences in digital newsroom management in countries in the region, and discussed solutions to optimize digital newsroom management.
Digital Newsroom Management - The Right Direction
At the second discussion session with the topic "Practice, experience and solutions for managing digital press offices in the ASEAN region", journalist Tran Tien Duan - Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus e-newspaper, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) commented: "Applying digital technology to change the newsroom model from human resource management, information production, data optimization, to the process of publishing and distributing content" - that is the direction that most press agencies have been building to create a multimedia newsroom that converges the values of technology, skills and adaptation to bring breakthrough values to the public.
Regarding digital newsroom management, in order for press agencies to keep up with the digital trend, newsrooms need to build a strong enough technical infrastructure and content management system (CMS) for digital technology to effectively serve journalism, helping journalists in the digital age reduce repetitive tasks and focus more on creating creative products.
Realizing the importance of digital transformation, more than 10 years ago, in information production and exploitation, VNA promoted the construction of a digital data warehouse, applied software to improve the speed of editing and producing news and articles, easily operated remotely or invested in the production of multimedia forms.
In particular, VNA focuses on the Mobile First strategy. To capture this trend, some VNA e-newspapers such as VietnamPlus have launched MiniApp on the Zalo platform along with the Progressive WebApp version, allowing users to directly access the VietnamPlus page on the mobile version via a shortcut via the icon on the Android phone screen, instead of having to go to the browser. These are steps within the mobile-first strategy of e-newspapers to facilitate users as well as increase access to the public more widely.
Presenting a paper on “News Television Center: Digital Transformation Mark”, Ms. Hoang Minh Nga - Head of International Department, News Television Center, VNA described in detail the production process of the MAM system - Media Access Management, which is a media management system in television stations and production units in a narrow sense. However, since all activities at television stations are more or less related to media, in a broader sense, MAM can be considered the center of a management system.
After a period of exploitation, the MAM system has clearly demonstrated its superiority compared to other software used in the unit. Information management on the system follows a closed model from pre-production, post-production to broadcasting. The biggest difference is the level of coverage of the software. Not just stopping at a normal media management software, the MAM system has expanded to allow management of all media-related work.
By using “only one database” for the entire closed information production process, News Television has minimized production costs, saved human resources, been open and transparent, and affirmed itself as a pioneer in the field of digital transformation, applying technology to radio and television production in Vietnam.
Solutions for building a digital newsroom from a technological perspective
Presenting at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Dieu, Director of the Center for Information Technology Application, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, said that it is necessary to consider solutions for building a digital newsroom from a technological perspective.
Specifically, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Dieu, in the context of the digital revolution, the issue of organizing and managing press and media activities is becoming a matter of concern for state management agencies as well as press agencies. One of the important aspects of this activity is the organization and management of the newsroom. Under the impact of digital technology, the newsroom management model has been changing from organizing product production to managing the newsroom to meet the increasing needs of the public.
Presenting the current status of newsroom management models in Vietnam, Mr. Tran Quang Dieu said that in order to build a digital newsroom model, we need to clearly understand the role and significance of the digital transformation process at press agencies. The digital transformation process of press agencies is often carried out through 3 stages: Digitalization stage, computerization stage and digital transformation stage.
Accordingly, in Vietnam, press agencies have transformed very quickly when Vietnam participated in the international integration process. In just a short time, press and media agencies in Vietnam have transformed into a digital environment, digitized data and computerized activities.
The speaker also suggested that in order to build a digital newsroom model, a press agency needs to ensure the following factors are well implemented: Building a digital culture and strategy; engaging readers; transforming and changing and improving processes; technology and data analysis and management. In particular, each press agency needs to build a cultural environment and build a digital strategy for each unit's activities, from newsroom management to product production and distribution and publishing.
In addition, in the new context, engaging readers of a press agency needs more attention than ever, especially in the context of "audience first".
A very important factor that directly affects the operation of a digital newsroom is the technology factor. Technology in this context is the right choice for each press agency instead of racing against technology to build a massive newsroom with full equipment. The best technology is the technology that best adapts to the development of the newsroom.
Mr. Tran Quang Dieu also gave suggestions for successfully building a digital newsroom model, emphasizing the factors of multi-platform, multi-service, multi-media; applying artificial intelligence and big data; developing digital content; organizing the newsroom towards converging technology and content and building a digital newsroom. In particular, the speaker said that it is necessary to personalize and customize press and media products according to public needs.
