Responding to new adverse events

Prominent among these new disadvantages for China is the new round of trade conflicts that US President Donald Trump has triggered against China. This includes the new US administration's intention to push China's political and economic role and influence away from Panama, to create a divide between Russia and China, and most recently, the US's direct and indirect intentions to target China's shipbuilding industry to protect its own. All these moves signal that the relationship between the US and China will face more turbulence than before during Trump's second term.

There is a stark contrast between the views and policies of Trump and his associates toward Russia and China, a contrast that the new US administration is likely to openly express. The level of friendliness towards Russia is in stark contrast to the level of tension with China. The US is actively drawing closer to Russia while widening its distance from China.

What happens later is unclear, but in the early stages of his current presidency, Trump seems to have prioritized foreign policy not on managing relations with China in general, or triggering a new round of trade conflict with China in particular, but on adjusting policy toward Russia to reshape the US relationship with Russia. This also aims to find common ground with Russia on a political solution to end the war in Ukraine.
