Under an initiative in partnership between UNICEF, Bangladeshi telecom operator Grameenphone and Norwegian telecom company Telenor, children and adolescents in Bangladesh will be equipped with core digital skills and raised awareness about the safe, ethical and responsible use of digital technology.
In its digitaleducation journey, UNICEF said the initiative will benefit more than 10 million students, including 4.2 million in grades 8 and 9. The project will prioritize supporting 1 million vulnerable children, including children with disabilities.
In addition, about 6 million students in grades 8 to 10 will participate in multiple sessions on online safety and digital literacy.
The project will also engage 25,000 teachers, 2 million guardians and parents with messages about the importance of online safety to extend their knowledge to the wider community.
UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, Mr. Sheldon Yett affirmed, "The Internet brings many educational and development opportunities for children" but it is important to "equip knowledge about digital technology and online safety to protect children from harmful content and online threats that can affect their health".
Since 2019, UNICEF has been working with Grameenphone and Telenor under Telenor’s global partnership programme. The aim of the programme is to raise awareness among children, parents and caregivers about safe internet practices and online risk reduction, and engage young people as digital influencers in their communities.
