Depending on the type of lychee, the selling price on the market has different differences, on average from 10,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, especially the Bac Giang U Hong lychee variety is currently being sold by traders for 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg.
Ms. Nguyen Lan Anh, a fruit vendor in Thien Ke commune (Binh Xuyen) said: "This year, lychee is cheap. At the beginning of the season, the price was 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, now it has decreased to 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg for the Bac Giang U Hong lychee variety."
Sharing about the record low price of lychee, Ms. Lan Anh said that this year the lychee crop was good, and her family hired a truck to buy it directly from the garden and sell it directly to the people, without going through traders, so they only took a small profit to boost consumption and sales.
Because the price is only 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg of lychee, customers come to buy in large numbers, the number of orders of Ms. Lan Anh increases, there are times when the shipping to customers is overloaded. The price of lychee is cheap, so every customer buys from 5-10 kg or more and the amount of lychee consumed by Ms. Lan Anh is several hundred kilograms/day.
Being an early ripening variety, the Bac Giang U Hong litchi is often the first to appear on the market, and is still sold a lot today and the price is at rock bottom, it cannot be lower. The characteristics of this litchi are large fruit, thin skin, light pink color when ripe, thick flesh, sweet taste, strong aroma.
Ripening after the U Hong Bac Giang litchi is the Luc Ngan litchi variety (Bac Giang). This type of litchi is more expensive, ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 VND. Although the fruit is smaller, Luc Ngan litchi is more popular among people because it has a rich sweetness, is easier to peel, has thick flesh, small seeds, and is bright red when ripe.
According to records, lychee harvest output this year in localities is expected to increase by about 30% compared to last year thanks to favorable weather conditions. In addition to commercial crop growing areas, lychee grown by local people is also abundant and has a good harvest.
Looking at the current low price of lychee shows that the profit earned by farmers is very low, perhaps only depending on increased consumption output and the story of good harvest and low price for farmers has not ended yet.
