After years of trying to regain its leadership, Intel is betting big on Panther Lake, the company’s landmark chip line of the past decade. This is the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 generation, expected to launch in late 2025 or early 2026, manufactured on the 18A process, which is expected to put Intel in direct competition with Apple, AMD and Qualcomm.

Panther Lake is designed to deliver powerful performance, longer battery life, and superior graphics. The chip line will come in a variety of configurations, from 8-core, 16-core versions to the highest-end version with 12 Xe3 graphics cores and 12 ray-tracing cores, promising to be the most powerful integrated GPU Intel has ever produced. Accordingly, Panther Lake's graphics performance can be 50% higher than the previous generation, while supporting both thin-and-light devices and high-performance gaming laptops.

Intel says the new Cougar Cove (P-core) and Darkmont (E-core) performance cores will help the chip achieve 50% higher multi-threaded performance and up to 40% lower power consumption at comparable performance compared to Lunar Lake. Despite removing the integrated memory that made the previous generation so efficient, Panther Lake is still optimized to reduce overall power consumption by about 10%, resulting in better battery life in real-world conditions.

In addition to processing power, Panther Lake also has comprehensive upgrades in graphics and AI. The new generation Xe3 GPU supports Intelligent Bias Control v3 technology, allowing the system to automatically transfer gaming tasks to the power-saving core to give power to the GPU, making the experience smoother and more stable.

The new chip integrates a new generation NPU for AI tasks, which is powerful but takes up less space and costs less. It supports up to 96 GB of LPDDR5 memory or 128 GB of DDR5, along with the modular LPCAMM standard, aiming for high customization for manufacturers. The image processor is upgraded with AIa noise reduction, while the multimedia processor supports AVC, AV1 10-bit video encoding and decoding as well as XAVC.

However, Intel has not yet announced the configuration details of each chip model or the official trade name. The chip maker confirmed that Panther Lake has entered the production stage, expected to deliver the first samples to partners later this year. The company hopes this will become the most popular PC platform in the industry, and at the same time, it is a testament to its new production capacity at the Fab 52 factory in Arizona (USA).
