Gold bullion reaches its highest price in the past two months.

Last week, domestic gold prices saw four consecutive days of sharp increases, bringing the price of gold bars and rings close to 87 million VND/ounce. By the end of the week, the price of SJC gold bars had increased sharply by 1.3 million VND/ounce compared to the closing price of the previous week.

This marks the third consecutive week of increases for gold bars, reaching nearly 3 million VND per tael. Gold bar prices are currently at their highest level in over two months.

Along with gold bars, the prices of gold rings and other gold jewelry have also surged. At the end of the week, businesses listed the buying price of gold rings at around 84.8 million VND/ounce and the selling price at 86.6 million VND/ounce, an increase of about 1.3 million VND/ounce compared to the previous weekend. The price of gold rings has reached its highest level in several weeks, approaching the price of SJC gold bars.

The price of plain gold rings has been adjusted upwards by businesses, ranging from 1.2 million to 1.3 million VND per tael.

Specifically, Saigon Jewelry Company listed the price of SJC gold bars at 84.8 - 86.8 million VND/ounce for buying and selling, an increase of 100,000 VND/ounce for buying and a sharp increase of 600,000 VND/ounce for selling compared to yesterday morning. The buy-sell spread widened to 2 million VND/ounce.

Other gold trading businesses such as Bao Tin Minh Chau Co., Ltd., DOJI Group, and Phu Quy Gold Investment Joint Stock Company also sharply increased the price of gold bars to 86.8 million VND/ounce.

The price of gold rings also increased sharply in line with the price of gold bars. Specifically, the price of plain round gold rings from Thang Long Gold at Bao Tin Minh Chau is listed at 85.5 - 86.9 million VND/ounce for buying and selling, a sharp increase of 400,000 VND/ounce for buying and 500,000 VND/ounce for selling compared to yesterday morning. The difference between the buying and selling price is 1.4 million VND.

The price of plain gold rings at Phu Quy Company is around 85.2 - 86.6 million VND/ounce, an increase of 300,000 VND/ounce for the buying price and a sharp increase of 400,000 VND/ounce for the selling price. The buy-sell spread is 1.3 million VND.

According to Kitco, the spot price of gold in the world market at 4:30 AM Vietnam time today was $2,688.96 USD/ounce. The price of gold remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Converted using the USD exchange rate on the free market (25,700 VND/USD), the world gold price is approximately 83.4 million VND/ounce (excluding taxes and fees). Therefore, the price of SJC gold bars is currently 2.8 million VND/ounce higher than the international gold price.

This week, global gold prices demonstrated strength, continuously rising to near the $2,700/ounce mark and reaching a four-week high, despite the US dollar and bond yields reaching multi-year peaks.

Strong labor market data on Friday pushed the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds to 4.76%, its highest level in 16 months. At the same time, the USD-Index rose above 109 points, its highest level in nearly three years. Despite these two hindering factors, gold prices continued to rise, ending the week with a gain of nearly 2%, heading towards the $2,700/ounce mark.

The forecast for SJC gold bar prices next week (January 13-19, 2025) suggests a continued increase, although there will be significant fluctuations.

The current SJC gold price is listed at approximately 84.80 million VND/ounce for buying and 86.80 million VND/ounce for selling. Over the past week, the gold price has increased by about 1.3 million VND/ounce.

Domestic gold prices typically fluctuate in line with global gold prices. If international gold prices continue their upward trend, SJC gold prices are likely to rise as well. However, the strengthening US dollar and high interest rates remain factors that could put pressure on gold prices. Despite these factors, forecasts suggest that SJC gold prices are likely to continue rising next week due to optimistic investor sentiment and the recovery of global gold prices.

Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, predicts that silver could surpass gold in 2025.

“This year’s silver price surge isn’t fundamentally different from previous surges. Silver still mirrors gold’s volatility, but with greater intensity. Often likened to ‘boost’ gold, silver tends to rise and fall more dramatically than its more stable counterpart,” Hansen said.

Hansen said silver will only reach its 12-year high in 2024, while gold is continuously setting historical records. “With its dual role – balancing investment demand and meeting industrial needs – silver could outperform gold next year,” the expert said.
