Sharon Lokedi and John Korir, both from Kenya, won the Boston Marathon.

In the women's event, Sharon Lokedi (Kenya) broke the Boston Marathon course record, defeating two-time champion Hellen Obiri, who won against her in a tight race last year.

Lokedi finished first in 2 hours 17 minutes 22 seconds, winning $150,000 in prize money and a $50,000 bonus for breaking the course record. The previous record of 2:19:59 was set by Buzunesh Deba in 2014.

After winning narrowly last year by eight seconds, Obiri finished 19 seconds behind Lokedi this time, missing out on the chance to become the first woman to win three consecutive titles since Fatuma Roba in 1999.

“I got my revenge this year,” Lokedi said with a laugh. “I couldn’t even believe it. I kept looking back and wondering, ‘Where is she (Obiri)?’. I’m really grateful to her for pushing me forward throughout the race.”

In the men's race, John Korir, also from Kenya, became the new champion. He finished the race in 2:04:45, the second fastest time in Boston Marathon history.

Despite a fall at the start that gave Korir a slow start, he quickly picked up speed to catch up with the leading group. After the fall, Korir’s bib number fell out, forcing him to tuck it into his running shorts and only pull it out as he sprinted toward the finish line.

Waiting for Korir at the finish line was his brother Wesley Korir, the 2012 Boston Marathon champion. Although the world's oldest and most prestigious marathon, held since 1897, has seen two men named John Kelley and two athletes named Robert Cheruiyot win, this is the first time a pair of brothers have won.

“My brother always told me to be strong and believe in myself,” said John Korir, who finished fourth and ninth in his previous two Boston appearances. “I followed his advice and won here.”

This is Korir's second major title in the past six months. Last time, he won the 2024 Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 2 minutes, 44 seconds - the eighth best marathon time in history at that time.
