Nguyen Van Lai broke the full marathon record of the VnExpress Marathon system.
Nguyen Van Lai's energetic run helped him cross the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 5 seconds, shattering the 42km VnExpress Marathon record set by Trinh Quoc Luong at the VnExpress Marathon Hanoi Midnight 2020 (2 hours and 31 minutes).
However, this achievement still didn't satisfy Nguyen Van Lai. He said that in cold weather conditions and with direct competition, the achievement might not have stopped at just a new record. In addition, the night race, with its disrupted circadian rhythm, also prevented the runner from confidently pushing his pace higher in the first few kilometers.
"My future goal is to continue running under 2 hours and 25 minutes," he said.
The athlete from Thanh Hoa province led throughout the race, facing no competition despite the 42km distance being considered unpredictable by experts, with a series of familiar faces including Le Tan Hi, Truong Van Quan, Nguyen Quoc Anh...
Earlier this year, Nguyen Van Lai also won the 42km race for the first time at the VnExpress Marathon Hue with a time of 2 hours and 32 minutes, setting a target of 2 hours and 25 minutes. After nearly 6 months, this runner has achieved the goal he set at the race earlier this year.
Nguyen Van Lai has been a record holder in Vietnamese athletics for over a decade in the men's 5,000m and 10,000m races. He has won numerous national gold medals and SEA Games gold medals for the Army's athletics team and Vietnamese sports in general. Before becoming a professional track and field athlete, Nguyen Van Lai was a cook in an Army unit.
