Mount Pac Ta resembles an elephant standing beside a majestic and imposing wine gourd. The mountain appears and disappears in the clouds swirling around the Na Hang hydroelectric lake in Tuyen Quang province .

The Na Hang hydroelectric reservoir area boasts many picturesque landscapes and enchanting fairy tales. Pac Ta Mountain is one of them.

Mount Pac Ta is associated with ancient legends. According to the story, in the past, this area was a dense forest home to many rare animals, including hundreds of elephants living in herds. Because the elephants were large and strong, the local people domesticated them to use as draft animals for transporting goods and as a means of transportation. That year, the Na Hang region was invaded by foreign enemies, and the people mobilized all their forces for the war, including herds of elephants. However, among the herd was one extremely ferocious male elephant that no one could tame; even the most skilled generals shook their heads in defeat. A mahout from afar came to volunteer for the job.

Initially, he instructed the villagers to block all the streams surrounding the elephants' habitat. After a few days, the elephants were thirsty and had no water to drink. He then poured alcohol into the crevices of the rocks, and the elephants would come to drink it instead of water. After five or ten days, the elephants gradually became accustomed to the alcohol and the mahout. He could place a saddle on the elephant's back and control it according to his commands, and from then on, the villagers named it "the alcohol elephant."
On the day of battle, the mighty "drinking elephant" bravely led the charge, trampling the enemy soldiers to death like fallen rice stalks. After the victory, the king bestowed upon the "drinking elephant" the title of Duke and held a lavish feast for the generals and soldiers. The "drinking elephant" indulged, drinking one jug of wine after another until it was completely drunk and died. Strangely, even in death, the elephant remained standing tall and majestic, just as it had been during the battle. That night, heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and howling winds lamented the loss of the villagers. The next morning, everyone was astonished to find both the elephant and the jugs of wine turned to stone, like the Pac Ta mountain we see today.

Today, Pac Ta Mountain is an attractive tourist destination. Visitors can take boat trips on the lake to visit the hydroelectric power plant, visit the temple to offer incense and pray, or experience multi-day ecotourism in the pristine forests. All of these things contribute to the strong appeal and charm of the Pac Ta mountain region.
