According to legend, in the past, this place was a dense forest with many rare animals, including hundreds of elephants living in herds. Elephants were big and strong, so the people in the area tamed them to pull goods and serve as a means of transportation. That year, the Na Hang area was invaded by foreign invaders, the people in the area gathered all their troops for the war, including herds of elephants going to battle. However, in the herd there was an extremely ferocious male elephant, no one could tame it, all the good generals had to shake their heads in defeat. An elephant trainer from far away came to ask to take on this job.

On the first day, he ordered the villagers to block all the streams around the elephant's living area. After a few days, the elephant was thirsty and had no water to drink. He poured wine into the holes in the rocks and the elephant came there to drink instead of water. After five or ten days, the elephant gradually got used to the wine and the mahout. He could put a saddle on the elephant's back and control it according to commands. From then on, the villagers named it "wine elephant".

On the day of the battle, the “wine elephant” bravely charged into battle, trampling the enemy troops to death. After winning the battle, the king conferred on the “wine elephant” the title of duke and held a grand banquet to entertain his generals and soldiers. The “wine elephant” drank one jar of wine after another until it got too drunk and died. Strangely, the elephant died but still stood tall and majestic as when it was in battle. That night, it rained heavily, thundered, and the wind howled like the villagers mourned for the “wine elephant”. In the morning, everyone was surprised to see both the elephant and the wine jar turned to stone like Pac Ta mountain now.

Nowadays, Pac Ta Mountain is an attractive tourist destination for visitors. People coming here can take a boat on the lake to visit the hydroelectric project, go to the temple to burn incense and pray or experience multi-day eco-tourism in the primeval forests. All of these things create a strong attraction for the charm of Pac Ta Mountain.
