Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training stipulates that 10th grade enrollment in non-public schools must be strictly conducted by selection, without organizing entrance exams or proficiency tests in any form.
Candidates for admission are students studying at secondary schools or vocational education centers - continuing education centers, continuing education facilities in Ho Chi Minh City or other provinces and cities, with valid records and meeting the following conditions: graduating from secondary school; age to enter grade 10 is 15 years old, for students who are allowed to skip grades or enter a grade at a higher age than the prescribed age, the age to enter grade 10 will be reduced or increased based on the age of the year of graduation from the previous grade.
In addition, students who have graduated from junior high school can apply for admission to colleges, intermediate schools, and vocational training centers that recruit junior high school graduates. Admission is based on junior high school graduation scores, total scores of subjects in 4 years of junior high school, and total scores of subjects in the final year of junior high school.
According to regulations of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the rate of students streaming after junior high school in Ho Chi Minh City in the 2023-2024 school year is 70% of junior high school graduates entering public grade 10. This year, 108,000 students graduated from junior high school in Ho Chi Minh City, but about 96,000 students registered for the public grade 10 entrance exam. With a target of about 77,000 students, about 20,000 students will not attend public schools after the grade 10 entrance exam.
Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that these students and about 12,920 students who did not register for the public 10th grade entrance exam but chose other learning methods did not lack places to study because private schools, international schools, colleges, intermediate schools, and vocational training centers enroll about 50,000 students. Thereby, students who did not pass the public school entrance exam can choose the learning model that best suits their abilities and family circumstances.
The Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training added that private schools and foreign schools enroll students according to their own plans, not exceeding the quota assigned by the Department of Education and Training each year and in accordance with regulations. The enrollment period is from July 3 to August 25 and schools must report their list of 10th grade students to the Department of Education and Training before August 31.
